“X-Rated ‘Harry Potter'” Series ‘The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself’ Is Coming to Netflix

Netflix is putting a gritty spin on its YA fantasy content, shrugging off the fairy wings of the Winx Saga and sloshing buckets of blood around in their place. The streamer’s upcoming series, The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, is being toted as a more grown-up offering for Netflix’s teen audience, and the trailer certainly indicates as much.

The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, which is based on The Half Bad novel trilogy from author Sally Green, follows Nathan (Jay Lycurgo) a 16-year-old boy whose father is “the world’s most dangerous witch.”

“Fearing he will follow in his father’s footsteps, Nathan is closely monitored throughout his childhood. As the boundaries between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ fray, Nathan – along with mischievous Annalise and charismatic Gabriel – will soon discover who he truly is,” the series logline reads, per Netflix.

The trailer, which Netflix dropped earlier this month, teases a gory, thrilling journey for Nathan as he grapples with the two sides of his identity — but still finds time for steamy hookups and brutal killings.

While the series is still a couple of days away from its Netflix debut, critics who have seen advance screeners of the show are comparing Nathan to another beloved fantasy character, Harry Potter himself.

The Telegraph described The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself as “the bildungsroman of a young male witch with a shadowy backstory, whose magical potential is complicated by a daunting prophecy – sort of an X-rated Harry Potter.”

And they’re not wrong. After all, Harry never shared a bed with Ron and Hermione, but Nathan cozies up with both Annalise (Nadia Parkes) and Gabriel (Emilien Vekemans) in a brief shot featured in the trailer.

Along with Lycurgo, Parkes and Vekemans, The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself also stars Isobel Jesper Jones, Paul Ready, David Gyasi, Kerry Fox, Liz White, Karen Connell, Fehinti Balogun, Misia Butler and Roísín Murphy.

The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself premieres Oct. 28 on Netflix. Watch the full trailer in the video above.
