Fantasy fans unite! His Dark Materials is back for a third and final season – and it looks to be as epic as ever.

Based on Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy, His Dark Materials takes place “on an incredible adventure into a parallel world where a human’s soul exists outside one’s body — in the form of a talking animal,” per HBO’s official synopsis.

It’s been a long time coming for this new season of His Dark Materials, as writing began in Fall, 2020 and filming took place during the Spring of 2021. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait any longer for season 3, as it will be premiering this December on HBO.

His Dark Materials Trailer

The trailer for season 3 of His Dark Materials was released by HBO on Nov 1, 2022. In the trailer, we see Asriel (James McAvoy) declaring that he’s “gathering the greatest from every world” to “ensure victory,” Father President MacPhail (Will Keen) calling for the body of Lyra, who dreams about meeting Roger and going to the land of dead, and Will Parry (Amir Wilson) planning to “take the knife to Asriel.”

His Dark Materials Season 3 Synopsis

This season of His Dark Materials is based on Pullman’s book The Amber Spyglass. In that book, the Magisterium, the extremist religious organizations that rules the many worlds, has decided to kill Lyra having learned of the prophecy that she is the second Eve. While in hiding, Lyra begins to dream of meeting her friend Roger in the land of the dead and agrees to do so. We don’t want to spoil too much of what is to come this season, so that’s all we’ll share for now.

Cast of His Dark Materials:

The main cast of His Dark Materials season 3 include Dafne Keen as Lyra (Logan), Ruth Wilson (The Affair, Luther) as Marisa Coulter, Will Keen (The Crown) as Father Hugh MacPhail, Ruta Gedmintas (Do No Harm) as Serafina Pekkala, Amir Wilson (2020’s The Secret Garden, The Letter for the King) as Will Parry, and James McAvoy (It Chapter Two, Dark Pheonix), as Lord Asriel, though it is unknown if he is a main cast member this season. Previous cast members of His Dark Materials have included Lin-Manuel Miranda, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Andrew Scott, Bella Ramsey, and Morfydd Clark.
