Watch Jake Lacy Charm and Deceive Anna Paquin in Exclusive ‘A Friend of the Family’ Clip

As the finale of Peacock‘s A Friend of the Family nears, the nine-episode miniseries about the real-life kidnappings of Jan Broberg is turning up the tension.

Episode 7, “The Great Deceiver,” ended with Detective Pete Welsh (Austin Stowell) uncovering the harrowing truth that Robert ‘B’ Berchtold (Jake Lacy) drugged and sexually abused Jan (now played by Mckenna Grace) before her first kidnapping. The search for Jan carries more urgency than ever, but while she hides away at boarding school, an exclusive clip from Episode 8, “Outer Darkness,” shows B reaching out to the Broberg family once again.

In the above clip from A Friend of the Family’s penultimate episode, the phone rings in the Broberg’s kitchen and Mary Ann (Anna Paquin) answers. B is at the other end of the line, and Bob (Colin Hanks) is recording the call in case he slips up. Still acting like he isn’t in direct contact with Jan, B lies and tells Mary Ann that a contact of his spotted the teen across state lines. “Why should I believe a word that comes out of your mouth?” Mary Ann snaps. “You’ll listen. Cause you’ll have nothing if you don’t,” he replies.

B says he’ll only reveal Jan’s whereabouts in person, because he knows the phone line is tapped. He asks Mary Ann to meet him alone — without Bob or the police — so he can safely share his information. And when she notes that he’s asking a lot of her, B replies, “Well, I’m doing you a favor, telling you everything I know. And I need to feel like there’s a little trust.”

It’s clear that B is manipulative as ever, but he’s also growing increasingly desperate. Though Mary Ann may go through with the meeting for Jan’s sake, her handling of the phone call proves she won’t be swayed by his charm like she was in the past.

Tune in to Episode 8 of A Friend of the Family, which airs on November 3, to see the aftermath of the call and what unfolds ahead of the November 10 finale.
