‘Degrassi’ Revival Axed by HBO Max Less Than a Year After It Was Announced

Degrassi is not getting the Gossip Girl treatment. The beloved teen drama, which was set to get its very own modern revival, has been scrapped before it ever premiered, Variety reports. The show has been canceled less than a year after it was picked up for 10 episodes at the streamer back in January.

The series, which was executive produced by Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen, was set to premiere on HBO Max in 2023, and would have told the stories of more Toronto teens “living in the shadow of events that both bind them together and tear them apart,” as previously announced by WarnerMedia Kids & Family.

HBO Max’s Degrassi revival was pitched a show that “travels deep into the hearts and homes of diverse, complicated characters, as they struggle to find their new normal, reaching for hope, redemption and love.”

And Azzopardi and Cohen were looking forward to reviving Degrassi as “a truly serialized one-hour drama,” they said in a statement earlier this year, adding, “We’re honored to be given the opportunity to lead this evolution and bring this iconic series back into people’s homes.”

The show would have marked the sixth Degrassi spinoff. The franchise first began in 1979 and includes five shows: The Kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi Junior High, Degrassi High, Degrassi: The Next Generation, and Degrassi: Next Class.

Over the years, plenty of famous actors have emerged from the Degrassi franchise, including Nina Dobrev, Shenae Grimes and perhaps most notably Aubrey Graham, or as most of us know him, Drake.

While we won’t be getting any new stars after HBO Max pulled the plug on the new Degrassi, we can still travel back in time and enjoy the originals. All 14 seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation are now streaming on HBO Max.
