Has From Scratch fully captured your heart? The new romantic drama on Netflix is based on a memoir by Tembi Locke, and sees the author teaming up with her sister to adapt the story for the small screen.
Zoe Saldaña leads the emotional series as Amy Wheeler, an American student studying abroad in Florence, Italy. After landing a job at a local bar, she falls head over heels for a Sicilian chef, Lino. As the series continues, the two get married and adopt a child together. However, new challenges arise after Lino falls ill of cancer and the once-carefree family is forced to deal with mortality, grief, and moving on.
The new series has left its audience with full hearts, along with pangs of weepiness and hunger. Once you’ve recovered, there are plenty of similar shows to dive into. Here are seven shows to queue up after watching From Scratch.
'Emily in Paris'
What did you like most about From Scratch? Was it the beautiful backdrop of Italy and the mouth-watering shots of food? Or was it a never-ending drama? Thankfully, you don’t have to choose because Emily in Paris has it all. While this Netflix series is more lighthearted and immature, it also features a mega-hot chef, an addictive romance, and an exciting exploration of a city in Europe.
'Firefly Lane'
Led by Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, Firefly Lane shares many similarities with From Scratch: it is based on a novel, it deals with medical drama, it features some massive time jumps, and it follows a family during a very tumultuous time of their lives. This one also dives into some super emotional territory, so be sure to have your tissues ready.
'This Is Us'
Told over six seasons, This Is Us takes an intimate look at a family, who despite their differences, share an unconditional love for each other. Lino’s big conflict with his parents can hardly compare to the baggage the Pearson family carries.
'Love Life'
If you’re looking for some more romance, but aren’t ready to commit to a new story, this HBO Max series is perfect for you. Love Life shuffles through its all-star cast to deliver an anthology series about all types of love, including long-lost love, unrequited love, and true love.
'Virgin River'
Now this one is a no-brainer! Virgin River is a fan-favorite series on Netflix because of its addictive, soap opera-esque storylines and combination of romance, small-town charm, and dangerous, unthinkable instances. While From Scratch ends with grief and loss, this series begins with it and follows its protagonist, Melinda “Mel” Monroe, as she seeks a fresh start after the loss of her husband.
'Parenthood'
Based on the 1989 film with the same name, the NBC series Parenthood follows a multi-generational family and the various issues they face. Despite its lean into comedy, throughout its six seasons, the show doesn’t shy away from drama as it explores storylines revolving around infidelity, medical issues, and falling in and out of love.
'After Life'
Does the title give it away? After Life deals with very heavy topics surrounding death. Unlike From Scratch, the show takes a more nihilistic perspective on what happens to those who feel “left behind” after a loved one passes away. However, in the truest dark comedy manner, the series eventually lightens up as it shifts to focus on the importance of companionship amid hard times.
