ABC has decided to cancel Avalon starring Neve Campbell, despite its prior straight-to-series order.
The series, based on a short story by Michael Connelly (whose works have inspired Bosch and The Lincoln Lawyer), was set to star Campbell as L.A. Sheriff Department Detective Nicole “Nic” Searcy, who heads up a small office on Catalina Island.
As more than a million tourists pour into the island each year, Detective Searcy’s strong morals are tested when a career-defining mystery challenges everything she knows about herself and the island. Catalina Island is “a gig no career-driven L.A. cop wants,” according to the official synopsis, “but Nic soon discovers her valuable detective skills are needed more on Avalon than she could have imagined.”
The show also stars Demetrius Grosse, Alexa Mansour, Steven Pasquale and Roslyn Ruff.
David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies) writes and executive-produces. Dana Calvo was tapped as showrunner and executive produces with Ross Fineman of Fineman Entertainment and Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson for A+E Studios. Production on the pilot was completed earlier this month.
After seeing the pilot, ABC decided not to move forward with the series, however, A+E Networks will explore its options and attempt to sell it to another network or streamer.
Disney is a part owner in A+E Studios, which was producing with 20th Television.
