7 Movies Like ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’

The movie adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing is pulling in plenty of audience love after getting less than favorable reviews from critics. The movie, which is now streaming on Netflix and available to watch on VOD, has an impressive 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to the rough 35% approval awarded by critics), and is sitting in Netflix’s #1 slot on the list of trending movies in the U.S.

The film, which arrived on Netflix Nov. 12, is based on a novel by Delia Owens, which follows a young woman named Catherine “Kya” Clark (Daisy Edgar-Jones) who is accused of murder after her ex-lover Chase Matthews (Harris Dickinson) is found dead.

The coming-of-age drama boasts an impressive cast with Edgar-Jones, who is best known for her leading role in Normal People, and Dickinson, from 2022’s See How They Run and Triangle of Sadness. The two star alongside Taylor John Smith, David Strathairn, and Garret Dillahunt.

There are numerous standout features with this 2022 release: it’s a sweet romance with a story of abandonment and a thrilling murder mystery, all wrapped up into one. If you were left craving more, here are seven movies to queue up after watching Where the Crawdads Sing.

'Gone Girl'

Released in 2014, Gone Girl, a psychological thriller, follows Amy (Rosamund Pike) as she fakes her disappearance and frames her husband in an act of revenge. While the movie doesn’t hold the same stillness and dramatics as Where the Crawdads Sing, it thrives in the dubious nature of its female protagonist.

Luckiest Girl Alive premiered on Netflix last month and follows Ani (Mila Kunis), a successful writer in New York City, as she is contacted by a detective investigating a tragedy that occurred at her high school. The drama’s underlying mystery feels less explosive than Where the Crawdads Sing, but will still pull at your heartstrings.

'Paper Towns'

Paper Towns is a light-hearted follow-up to Where the Crawdads Sing. At the drama’s core is the tight bond between Quentin “Q” Jacobsen (Nat Wolff) and Margo Roth Spiegelman (Cara Delevingne), but beyond that, the movie shines the brightest when it hones in on the misunderstood nature of its young characters. Just like Kya, who grew up alone in the Marshlands, these protagonists are desperate to find peace within themselves and each other.

Kitty Green’s The Assistant follows a front-desk assistant named Jane (Julia Garner) throughout one day of work at a big-city film production company. As the day passes on, she makes observations about the harsh ways in which her colleagues are treated, and her boss’s sinister misconduct. There is no mystery at the core of this movie because everything really is how it seems, but Jane carries a quiet defiance, similar to Kya’s, that will have you siding with her through thick and thin.

In The Fallout, Jenna Ortega plays high schooler Vada Cavell. The teen drama follows the Vada as she comes to terms with a traumatic moment in her life: seeking refuge in a bathroom with two classmates during a school shooting. The movie watches her withdraw from those around her and seek relief through unhealthy coping mechanisms. Similar to Where the Crawdads Sing, it is an exploration of teenage trauma and relationships that have the ability to make-or-break one’s self.

Finally, if you were solely into Where the Crawdads Sing for the drama, be sure to tune into Don’t Worry Darling next. Olivia Wilde’s gossip-tainted release throws it back to the 1950s and follows a seemingly-perfect couple, Alice and Jack, as their relationship and lives begin to devolve into nonsense. There’s a love story, a mystery and a few worthy reveals — and even if you don’t think it’s perfect, you’ll be in for an undeniably entertaining time.
