Queen Latifah Tells Drew Barrymore of the Shocking Moment When Mariah Carey Sang Her Own Song Back to Her

What happens when the Queen of Christmas meets Queen Latifah? We found out on this morning’s episode of  The Drew Barrymore Show, when the rapper/singer looked back on her 1993 album “Black Reign” and the Mariah Carey moment that left her shocked.

Queen Latifah and host Drew Barrymore were playing a game of Behind the Scenes when Barrymore asked her guest about her Grammy award-winning album, which the musician revealed was her “favorite album to make.”

“Lost my brother, motorcycle accident — I’m 22, he’s 24. Went in the studio, leave me alone, everyone left me alone and let me just pour my heart into this album to make music,” she said of making the “dark” album. “And from it came records like ‘Just a Day,’ ‘U.N.I.T.Y,’ and the song I dedicated to him called ‘Winki’s Theme.'”

Queen Latifah remembered being at the Bowery Bar, where she said “everybody” used to go. The musician said Carey happened to be there one night, and the “All I Want For You Singer” came up to her singing a line from the song Queen Latifah had dedicated to her brother.

Queen Latifah, bringing us right back in time with her, then reenacted the look of shock on her face for the audience. And we can’t blame her — we’d be pretty shocked, too.

“Mariah Carey walked over and sang my song,” Queen Latifah recalled. “I was like, ‘What in the Whitney world of…?’ I mean, this is big singers singing a song to you.”

Returning to the topic of the album, she told Barrymore, “I called it ‘Black Reign’ because I felt like I’m a Queen, I’m Black, and I’m reigning, but it was also a dark time that I was working through so it was always, ‘Thank God for music.’ I love the music.”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays at 9:30/8:30c on CBS.
