‘Slumberland’s’ Stuffed Pig Is Almost As Cute As Baby Yoda

The CGI pig in Slumberland—the new Jason Momoa that began streaming on Netflix on Friday—is absolutely adorable. It’s so adorable that it made me, a 30-year-old woman, immediately want to buy the Slumberland pig stuffed animal. And yes, I know that previous sentence just made 12 Netflix marketing executives in a conference room in Los Angeles whoop and cheer. What can I say? They are good at their jobs!

Every kid-friendly fantasy media—especially kid-friendly fantasy media that releases around the holiday season, when parents are on the hunt for Christmas presents—needs an adorable animal sidekick. The Mandalorian had Baby Yoda, which was undoubtedly one of the hottest Christmas presents of 2020. And now Slumberland has Pig, who may not be quite as seismic as little Grogu, but is nonetheless adorable and marketable. Say what you want about this loose adaptation of the classic comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland, but it absolutely comes through on the animal sidekick front. Said sidekick is a stuffed pig, known simply as “Pig,” who comes alive when our protagonist Nemo (Marlow Barkley) falls asleep and enters the magical dreamworld of Slumberland.

Pig, like many of our childhood security blankets and stuffed animals, is a source of comfort for young Nemo, who is at the crucial age between being a kid and being a teenager. On the last night she sees her father (played by Kyle Chandler) alive, Nemo insists she’s too old to sleep with a stuffed animal—but then quickly runs to grab her beloved toy as soon as her father leaves the room. After losing her father, a lighthouse operator, to a tragic accident in the sea, Nemo begins to visit a magical realm in her dreams. There, she meets Flip (Jason Momoa), a satyr-like thief who was the star of her father’s fantastical bedtime stories. Flip needs Nemo’s help to find a map of Slumberland, and Nemo needs Flip’s to see her father again, so the two team up. And Pig, who becomes animated in this fantastical world of dreams, comes along, too.

While not all of this heavily CGI-ed movie looks great, the animated Pig never fails to delight. His ears perk and flop, his head tilts in curiosity, his little snout wrinkles, and he waddles adorably as he walks. He doesn’t talk—thank god—but oinks or snorts in surprise, joy, alarm, and even indignation (when Flip inadvertently offends him). Though he can’t exactly converse with Nemo, he nonetheless looks out for her. He tugs on her pants leg when he senses danger and distracts her enemies at key moments. I admit I was more distraught about Pig getting washed away in the storm in the movie’s climactic story than I was for Nemo. (The girl was always going to live! Jury was still out on the stuffed animal!) Don’t worry—he makes it.

So where can you buy an adorable Slumberland pig stuffed animal for your kid? (Or for yourself—no shame!) The official Netflix shop is selling a Slumberland pig plush for $20, though unfortunately, they are currently out of stock. You can enter your email on the Netflix shop website to be notified when the stuffed animal is back in stock. The pig is small—only 14 inches long—with a Slumberland heart stitched into the side. Momoa modeled the Slumberland pig stuffed animal on the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of the movie earlier this month.

Aw! He’s even wearing a little bowtie!

If you need a Slumberland-esque stuffed pig ASAP for the holidays and don’t want to wait for the Netflix shop to restock, you can find some pretty similar options on Amazon and other shopping websites by searching for “stuffed pig.” Honestly, that might make your child’s dream companion even more lovable and unique. Do you think Nemo and her dad were shopping at the Netflix store while they were living in that lighthouse? No way!
