Will ‘Avenue 5’ Return to HBO for Season 3?

Warning: Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 8 of Avenue 5 ahead.

HBO’s delightful gem, Avenue 5, aired its Season 2 finale on November 28, and since the sophomore season definitely didn’t end with a space rescue, fans can’t help but wonder if the story will continue with a Season 3.

Armando Iannucci’s interstellar comedy follows a group of wealthy passengers onboard a luxurious space cruise led by Captain Ryan Clark’s (Hugh Laurie). After a series of unfortunate, deeply bizarre events, Captain Ryan’s ship is knocked nearly a decade off course, leaving its crew and passengers desperately scrambling (and continuously failing) to come up with survival and rescue plans.

If you devoured Season 2’s eight episodes and find yourself wanting more of Avenue 5’s space shenanigans, you’re not alone. Wondering if there will be a Season 3 of Avenue 5 on HBO? And what a Season 3 of Avenue 5 might look like? We’ve got you covered. Here’s everything we know about the future of the series.

Will There Be a Season 3 of Avenue 5 on HBO?

As of right now, we’re not sure what the future holds for Avenue 5. But that’s not to say there isn’t hope for a Season 3 of the HBO comedy. A rep for the show confirmed to Decider that there’s no update on a potential Season 3 yet, but in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator Armando Iannucci expressed interested in continuing the series and stressed that HBO hasn’t canceled it.

“HBO doesn’t really renew a season until the previous season is going out,” Iannucci told EW. “Because we got delayed by the pandemic by about 18 months, we knew that meant everyone’s contracts would run out, because they’re contracted for a certain period. We just thought, everyone’s got 101 other things to be doing, so it would be unfair to kind of keep them on hold in limbo. But everyone wants to do more. HBO are very keen. We’ll make more when we can corral everyone together again. Everyone’s up for it and we’ve already got ideas and thoughts about what happens next.”

Though new episodes may take a while if the show is renewed, Iannucci’s comments from October 2022 sound incredibly hopeful. And we can’t wait to see what other chaotic ideas the team could bring to screen.

What Could Happen In Avenue 5 Season 3?

When we left the Avenue 5 crew in Season 2, Episode 8, “That’s Why They Call It a Missile,” they had miraculously survived the TOTOPOTUS’ (The Office of The Other President of the United States) missile that was careening towards them. But the crew and passengers are still very much stranded in space, and now they’re not only stranded, they’re separated into two halves of the ship.

If Avenue 5 returns for a third season, we’ll likely see the aftermath of the ship split and efforts to reunite the two halves. (After all, only one half of the ship has the eels, aka the main source of food in space!) We’ll hopefully see Spike (Ethan Phillips) safely return to the ship in his escape pod, Doug (Kyle Bornheimer) and Mads (Adam Pålsson) navigate parenthood in Mia’s (Jessica St. Clair) absence, and the repercussions of Ryan’s marriage to Charles (Jonathan Aris) and Karen (Rebecca Front). Rav (Nikki Amuka-Bird) and Matt (Zach Woods) shared an impromptu smooch in the Season 2 finale, so perhaps that will blossom into something bigger. Judd (Josh Gad) is possibly getting fed to eels. Who knows! And of course, we’ll see more of Ryan and Billie’s big lithium asteroid lie to Lucas (Arsher Ali), and possibly some sort of legitimate rescue mission.

Over the course of its two seasons, Avenue 5 has explored everything from cannibals and throuples to fascism and death by flying directly into the sun, so we have no doubt a potential Season 3 would feature more hilariously extra storylines. We’ll be sure to update this piece when we hear more concrete news about Avenue 5 Season 3, but until then, it might be time for a rewatch.

The first two season of Avenue 5 are now streaming on HBO Max.
