Where Was Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’ Filmed? All the Real-Life Locations

Netflix‘s new hit series Wednesday is creepy and it’s kooky, and it’s currently the streamer’s #1 show – shattering the record for most hours viewed for an English-language show in a single week.

Taking place at the fictional Nevermore Academy under the direction of Tim Burton, the series is gorgeously gothic, featuring lavish castles, ballrooms and gardens plus dusky forests, all of which were filmed in Romania (which is considered the real home of Dracula).

Curious about Wednesday‘s shooting locations? Here’s everything you need to know before booking your trip to the Balkans to live out your own supernatural adventure!

Where Was Wednesday filmed?

Netflix’s fantasy series was filmed in Romania after pre-production in Canada. In an interview with GoldDerby, production designer Mark Scruton said, “We started in Toronto, we ended up in Romania. We looked at a lot of different castles and palaces and environments to base it on.”

And as for the physical location of Nevermore Academy, they found that in Cantacuzino Castle – where they filmed the exterior and interior shots – in Bușteni, Romania. Scruton said, “We ended up with Cantacuzino, which is the one you see in the show, and really there was not a lot of it left by the time we finished adding and enhancing and moving around with it. We used the location for about three or four days.”

Open for public viewing, the castle is made of stone and brick and features Roman mosaics, Italian glazed pottery and limestone fireplaces throughout its multiple levels. Scruton told Gold Derby, “There was a central column that Tim [Burton] really hooked in on that had that kind of Addams Family quality to it without it being a direct reference and I think that was a lynchpin for everything else.”

Per Netflix Romania, additional shooting locations for Nevermore Academy include Casa Niculescu and Gradina Botanica Dimitrie Brândza, both in Bucharest (Romania’s largest city). The first of which provided the fictional school’s staircase and hallways while the latter was the botanical garden frequented often by Wednesday and her peers, as well as Christina Ricci‘s surprise character, Ms. Thornhill, the academy’s botanical sciences teacher.

Now, what about the school that Wednesday is expelled from in the opening sequence of the series? Those scenes were shot in the Politehnica University of Bucharest and the nearby Bazinul de Înot Dinamo, a public swimming pool located in a sports park, which are only a ten-minute drive from one another.

The series also shot at Conacul Olga Greceanu, a historical manor in Bălteni, and Gara Regala, a train station in Sinaia. Check out Netflix Romania’s brief video of the filming locations above.
