Jerrod Carmichael Will Host Golden Globes 2023 as Awards Show Returns After Boycotts and Backlash

The Golden Globes are back and better than ever, with a new host. Emmy-award winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael will take the stage to host the award show in January, Variety reports.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Helen Hoehne shared a statement announcing Carmichael’s upcoming gig, praising his “comedic talents,” which she said “have entertained and thrilled audiences while providing thought-provoking moments that are so important in the times we live,” per Variety.

Hoehne added, “Jerrod is the special kind of talent this show calls for to kick off the awards season.”

Though Carmichael hasn’t hosted an award show before, the comedian is quite familiar with NBC, the network where the Golden Globe Awards air, having recently received an Emmy nomination for hosting Saturday Night Live back in April. He also served as the creator, writer and director of The Carmichael Show, which aired on the network from 2015-2017. Most recently, Carmichael won an Emmy for writing his comedy special Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel.

The Golden Globes are returning to TV after taking a hiatus last year. The show was dropped by NBC after allegations of racism and sexual harassment within the HFPA in a report by the Los Angeles Times. As a result, the award show continued as a “private event,” with the likes of Andrew Garfield and Nicole Kidman winning awards without the attention of a broadcast audience.

This year, the show is coming back to TV “as part of a one-year agreement, which allows the HFPA and [producer Dick Clark Productions] to explore new opportunities for domestic and global distribution across a variety of platforms in the future,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

But even without the Golden Globes broadcast, this year has been a hectic one for award shows. From the “slap heard round the world” at the Oscars to Jimmy Kimmel sleeping on stage at the Emmys, the awards were never the mainstay of the ceremonies. Could the return of the Golden Globes change that? We’ll just have to see what happens when Carmichael takes the stage for the award show on Jan. 10, 2023.
