New Movies & Shows To Watch This Weekend: ‘Emancipation’ Apple TV+ & More

Will you embrace Will Smith this weekend with open arms? He and Apple TV+ are hoping you will now that his first film since this year’s infamous Oscars slap is coming to the platform. But if you’re not ready to forgive him just yet, there are dozens of other new releases this weekend to choose from, including a sparkly holiday rom-com on Prime Video and Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited Pinocchio. With so many great new shows and films to choose from, let us here at Decider help you figure out what to watch this weekend and where to stream it.

New Movies and Shows to Stream This Weekend: Emancipation, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Something From Tiffany’s + More

Real-life slap drama aside, Antoine Fuqua’s Emancipation has long been discussed as an Oscar contender, with many floating the idea that Will Smith could win a second Best Actor statue for his work in the film about a man attempting to escape slavery during the Civil War. Now that it’s available, the court of public opinion as to whether he deserves our praise is now in session. Over on Prime Video, the romantic comedy Something From Tiffany‘s promises a merry and bright alternative, as Zoey Deutch and Shay Mitchell star as women who are gifted the wrong Tiffany boxes by their boyfriends, with one of them containing an engagement ring meant for the other. Is that too capitalist pig for you? Try Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio on Netflix, which is set in Fascist Italy on the eve of World War II. Del Toro has stated that the film, which is decidedly more adult than most other versions you know, takes place at a time in history “when everyone was behaving like a puppet, except for puppets.”

New on Apple TV+ December 9: Emancipation

Remember when Will Smith won an Oscar for King Richard? It would have been the highlight of a great career, but for the infamous slap that preceded it. This week marks the beginning of Smith’s redemption tour with the new Apple TV+ film Emancipation, which tells the story of an enslaved man named Peter who attempts to escape from his Louisiana plantation in an effort to reunite with his family and gain his freedom. The film, which was originally slated for an earlier release but was pushed after the controversy surrounding Smith’s slap, co-stars Ben Foster and Charmaine Bingwa.

New on Amazon Prime Video December 9: Something From Tiffany’s

Raise your hand if you love a holiday rom-com set against the backdrop of a city that’s been festively lit up for the season. There’s a reason films like Love Actually are so enduring, there’s just something about kissing under mistletoe and feeling the love of the holiday season, and the new Prime Video film Something From Tiffany‘s might just be your new favorite holiday romance. In the film, Zoey Deutch stars as Rachel, who’s on the fence about staying with her boyfriend Gary (Ray Nicholson). At Christmas, he surprises her with a gift from Tiffany’s, but they’re both shocked to see that the earrings he bought for her have been replaced with an engagement ring. The mix-up creates havoc for them as well as the couple the ring was meant for, Ethan and Vanessa (Kendrick Smith Sampson and Shay Mitchell) and the couples make some hard decisions about who they’re meant to be with after all.

New on Netflix December 9: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

In a year full of Pinocchio movies, are you team Guillermo del Toro, or team Robert Zemeckis? Both directors have put their stamp on the story of a wooden toy whose maker, Geppetto, wishes for him to become real. A passion project for del Toro, the film has been in development since 2008, and it features the stop-motion animation of Mark Gustafson. Working together to embrace the original source material, the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, the film features several major (and much darker) differences from most other film adaptations. This version also features the talents of Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, and David Bradley.
