New Movies on Streaming: ‘Spoiler Alert,’ ‘Aftersun,’ + More

Take some time away from your relatives, wrapping gifts and frying up latkes for some me time this weekend by taking in one of the great new movies on VOD that are out now! We’ve got two emotional powerhouses, Spoiler Alert and Aftersun, if you want to really feel something in your heart, and one movie that might replace Die Hard as your favorite holiday action flick, Violent Night, which stars David Harbour from Stranger Things as an ass-kicking Santa.

Violent Night comes from the producers of Nobody and John Wick, just to give you an idea of what you’re in for. When a wealthy family is taken hostage by a group of mercenaries on Christmas eve, Santa (the real Santa, not some mini-mall knockoff) happens to be delivering gifts to them at the Connecticut compound at just the right moment to swoop in and save them. Lest you think Santa just runs them over with his sleigh, this Santa was trained in combat thanks to his service as a murderous Viking warrior. Violent Night co-stars John Leguizamo as the leader of the hostage-takers, and Beverly D’Angelo, making an appearance in yet another modern Christmas classic (the first is obviously National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation).

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Aftersun

Hailed as one of the best films of the year by many, Aftersun is the feature film debut from director Charlotte Wells. In it, Normal People‘s Paul Mescal stars as Calum, a divorced dad who takes his daughter Sophie (Frankie Corio) to a sunny, Turkish resort where they have a grand old time, but something is amiss in Calum’s life. His daughter can sense it and she’s aware of his underlying anxieties, despite how he tries to hide them, but Calum is intent on giving his daughter a trip to remember, one that the adult version of Sophie looks back on throughout the film.

Spoiler Alert

Based on entertainment journalist Michael Ausiello’s memoir Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies At The End, Spoiler Alert stars Jim Parsons as Ausiello as he chronicles the final year of his husband, Kit Cowan’s (Ben Aldridge) life after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The film co-stars Bill Irwin, Sally Field and Antoni Porowski, for those of you who want to check him out in a non-Queer Eye role.
