The Wildest ‘The View’ Moments of 2022

I’ve been covering ABC‘s The View for years now, and after watching nearly every day, I’ve witnessed my fair share of wacky moments. Sure, there’s the classic fights that erupt every now and then (but they’ve certainly shrunk in scale and frequency since Meghan McCain’s exit from the talk show) — but I’m talking about weird, live TV moments that could only happen on The View.

What other talk show has seen one co-host literally spray another down with a bottle, or dressed a child in a gold Halloween costume to represent Will Smith’s Oscars slap…less than a year after it happened? Those two instances and dozens more happened on The View in just the last year, but I’ve whittled the list down to just 10 can’t-miss segments that made even my jaw drop.

It’s moments like these that make my job covering The View fun, easy and always surprising. Here’s to another year of antics around the Hot Topics table in 2023!

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.

Joy Behar Claims to Have a Light in Her Vagina

On one fateful day in September, Joy Behar uttered one of her most iconic lines in years on The View: “There’s a light in my vagina.” It all went down after she showed up to work in bright pink instead of her usual all-black outfit, and her co-host Whoopi Goldberg told Behar she had a certain “glow” that day, then asked if she was pregnant.

Behar, after delivering her NSFW joke, added, “I don’t know. And it’s emanating through my entire being.”

Never change, Joy.

Alyssa Farah Griffin Snaps at Ana Navarro

Say what you will about Alyssa Farah Griffin, but the conservative co-host typically keeps her cool around the Hot Topics table, despite her political differences. On a December episode of the show, however, she was pushed a little too far by Ana Navarro during a conversation about “toxic femininity.”

After Navarro snidely pointed to Griffin’s past working with Kellyanne Conway under the Trump administration, Griffin hit back, telling her, “I can’t really get a word in without you attacking me, so I wouldn’t say this is totally different. This isn’t, like, a totally different environment of women supporting each other.” Ouch.

Ted Cruz Gets Heckled

Before Ted Cruz even appeared on The View, it was a given that he wouldn’t be the most popular guest in the show’s history, but I wasn’t expecting a full-on protest to take place when he sat down at the Hot Topics table. Sure enough, activists from Extinction Rebellion NYC interrupted Cruz’s October appearance by yelling obscenities at the senator as he sat there and laughed uncomfortably.

As they told the Texas politician, “Fuck you, Ted Cruz, you climate-denying piece of shit,” Whoopi Goldberg shut down the chaos, telling them, “Let us do our job. We hear what you have to say but you gotta go.”

The protestors were escorted from the show, but their unforgettable moment lives on after it was captured on TikTok.

The Slap Gets Its Own Halloween Costume

The View paraded out a lineup of costumes to celebrate Halloween this year, but one stood out amongst the rest: a physical representation of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. The show sent a poor kid out there dressed in a shiny gold outfit, face paint and all, then stuck a bright red handprint across their cheek.

Wardrobe Supervisor Ashley Alderfer Kaufman introduced the costumes, including the Slap look, and told viewers, “We do not want to endorse violence of any kind but we couldn’t help but talk about one of the hottest topics of this year.”

Somehow, the look got more buzz on Twitter than inflation (which was represented by another child wearing a car dealership inflatable and fake money) or the Mar-a-Lago raid (another kid donning a Donald Trump wig and a toilet costume).

Kellyanne Conway Rips Into Alyssa Farah Griffin

Kellyanne Conway did not have a friendly reunion with her old coworker when she visited The View in May. The former Senior Counselor to Donald Trump clashed big time with Alyssa Farah Griffin, who also worked for Trump as the White House as Director of Strategic Communications and Assistant to the President before her resignation.

During a heated conversation about Trump’s presidency and the Jan. 6 insurrection, Conway grew frustrated, telling Griffin, “You get to talk here every day, I’m here as a guest,” as she was interrupted, and later slammed Griffin for denouncing Trump.

“Alyssa, if you’re saying that somehow you think we’re supposed to think that you’ve seen the light, and not just seen your name in lights, that’s not fair,” Conway said, while Griffin called her out for taking a “cheap shot.” It was a mess, but it made for some of the best live TV on The View this year.

Joy Behar Says She's Hooked Up with Ghosts

Joy Behar may be married, but before she settled down with her husband Steve, she was getting busy with some spooky paramours. During a conversation about a Texas woman who claimed her home was haunted by some horny ghosts, Behar said she’d experienced something similar, telling the panel, “I’ve had sex with a few ghosts [and] never got pregnant.”

She doubled down on the joke in a later episode, once again mentioning her past lovers.

“It’s all true. I have had sex with ghosts,” she said during a late October show. “Casper was not a generous lover. The ménage à trois — it was almost like having sex with myself. So light. So yes, it’s true, ladies and gentlemen.”

Whoopi Goldberg Calls Out Reviewer for Fat Suit Remark

Whoopi Goldberg set the record straight on an early October episode of The View when she called out a journalist for incorrectly claiming she wore a fat suit in her film, Till. The very awkward moment happened when Goldberg was recapping her weekend and mentioned she was celebrating the movie’s New York Film Festival premiere.

“There was a young lady who writes for one of the magazines, and she was distracted by my fat suit in her review,” she said, before adding, “And I’m just gonna say this: I don’t really care how you felt about the movie, but you should know that was not a fat suit. That was me.”

The audience let out a few nervous laughs, and Goldberg later delivered a message to the writer, facing the camera as she said, “I assume you don’t watch the show or you would have known that that was not a fat suit. But I just want to let you know that it’s okay not to be a fan of a movie, but you wanna leave people’s looks out. So just comment on the acting, and if you have a question, ask somebody. ‘Cause I’m sure you didn’t mean to be demeaning.”

Sunny Hostin Gets Sprayed Down by Whoopi Goldberg

Sunny Hostin needed a reality check on The View back in May when she got a little too heated over Jesse Williams. While chatting about nude photos of Williams from his performance in Broadway’s Take Me Out, the co-host said, “Jesse Williams looks like a specimen. He looks gorgeous, he looks beautiful. His body is beautiful, and I have at least — and this is serious — 20 friends that have now bought tickets because of what they saw.”

She continued to praise the actor during the segment, telling viewers Williams “looks like a statue, looks beautiful … he looks like the David,” but before she could carry on about how “gorgeous” he is, Goldberg pulled out a spray bottle emblazoned with The View logo and doused her as Hostin welcomed the spritz, leaning back with her neck outstretched.

“Cool off!” Goldberg exclaimed. The View really is at its best when it lets loose.

Joy Behar Tumbles from Her Chair Onstage

Joy Behar got off to a rocky start during a March show this year when she fell while trying to sit down in her chair at the Hot Topics table. The co-host, in typical Behar fashion, immediately turned her fumble into a joke, telling the audience, “25 years, that has never happened. Who do I sue?!”

Whoopi Goldberg joined in, telling viewers, “I want to clear something up, because you know how things get out and do things. I just want to clear up, Sara [Haines] did not trip Joy. She did not do it, and stop sending us texts!”

When The View returned for a new season in September, Behar and her co-hosts were seated in a new style of chair — described as “more stable” by Entertainment Weekly — and not one has taken a tumble since.

Whoopi Goldberg Tries to End 'The View' Early

Whoopi Goldberg surprised both viewers and her co-hosts when she tried to check out of work early during a September episode of The View. While wrapping up a conversation about humor in relationships, Goldberg tried to end the show a full 20 minutes early, telling viewers, “Next, I wanna say, you all have been a great audience, we love that you are watching. We want you all to have a great day today. Take a little —”

She stopped when someone off-camera clearly alerted her that there was more time left in the episode, asking, “No? No?” and Sunny Hostin got right to it, telling Goldberg, “We got more show.”

The audience ate it up, breaking into cheers as Goldberg looked down at her cue cards and frowned, shrugging off her mistake. “All right, whatever,” she said, before assuring fans, “We’ll be back!”
