‘Wednesday’ Leaving Netflix? No, the Show Isn’t Heading to Prime Video

Fans of Netflix’s Wednesday need not be afraid of the series disappearing from the service in a snap snap. New reporting seems to clear up all the rumors about the hit series jumping from Netflix to another service. These rumors began in December when The Independent theorized that since Amazon bought MGM, the studio behind Wednesday, the series’ future would lie on Prime Video, Amazon’s streaming service, rather than Netflix. Thanks to some new reporting, that seems as likely as Wednesday becoming a brand ambassador for Lisa Frank.

What’s On Netflix did some sleuthing, including speaking to undisclosed industry sources, and deduced that it’s actually Netflix’s call as to whether or not Wednesday has a future on the platform. To sum up: Netflix has the option to renew Wednesday for Season 2 on Netflix for a predetermined period. That means that as long as Netflix renews Wednesday in that window, the show stays on Netflix. If Netflix lets that window close, then yes, it’s likely that Wednesday’s future would be in the hands of Amazon, and therefore Prime Video (or possibly Freevee, Amazon’s ad-supported streaming service). Decider has reached out to Netflix for a statement regarding the rumors of Wednesday leaving for Prime Video.

Keep in mind that — to editorialize for a sec — it would be wild for Netflix to not renew Wednesday for Season 2. The series broke Netflix’s record for most hours viewed in a week, outpacing even Stranger Things. The series gave Netflix quite possibly its biggest viral trend of the year. And Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s head of U.S. and Canada scripted series, told Variety that he was “optimistic” about Wednesday.

And even if Netflix passes on Season 2 — which, reminder, Season 1 was a mega hit for them — then it would be up to Amazon to potentially renew the series. And as What’s On Netflix reports, even if Netflix declines to order Season 2 and the show moves to Prime Video, Wednesday Season 1 would continue to be available on Netflix for 10 years following its debut.

Granted, there is precedence for popular Netflix originals leaving the service and finding a streaming home elsewhere. Most notably, that’s what happened with Netflix’s Marvel seriesDaredevil, Jessica Jones, etc. — almost a year ago. However, the situation with Wednesday is a bit different. For one thing, MGM hasn’t announced that they’re going to make original Addams Family content for Prime Video. That’s what happened when Disney+ was announced and Marvel revealed that they were going to make original superhero shows for that streamer, in direct competition with the then-active Netflix/Marvel shows. And as for the streaming rights to those Marvel shows, Disney apparently paid a billion dollars in order to cut their Netflix contract short and add them to Disney+ last February. If Amazon wanted to steal Wednesday away from Netflix, it would probably cost them.

So to sum up: it looks like despite MGM being owned by Amazon, Netflix still has the right to renew Wednesday for Season 2. And with all that potentially settled, we can all shift our attention to what really matters: perfecting our Wednesday dance routines.
