The House of Representatives is set to meet today at noon to discuss electing a speaker after GOP House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy failed to lock down enough votes to win speakership yesterday (Jan. 3) following three rounds of voting.

As the process goes, the speaker nominee needs to gather 218 votes to win the speakership, but CNN reports that the number could change if members withhold their votes. But that doesn’t seem to be the case, as it was reported that Democratic candidate Rep. Hakeem Jeffries won nine more votes than McCarthy in the first ballot vote for the speaker position, per The Hill.

A supporter of McCarthy told CNN, “He [McCarthy] probably has another 24 hours to get an agreement. If he can’t negotiate to get an agreement on speaker, it means he won’t be able to negotiate and get to 218 on anything controversial. Maybe nobody else can either, but he certainly can’t.”

Since neither candidate achieved the 218 votes needed to win the title, the election continues – and with high stakes, given that the House becomes limited in its jurisdictions until a new speaker is elected.
