Snap, snap! In a snap, Netflix has snapped up a second season of snappy hit Wednesday faster that you can say “snap.” Actually, it took a little longer than that, but you get the idea.

“It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world,” EPs Alfred Gough and Miles Millar said in a joint statement provided by Netflix via press release. “Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two. We can’t wait to dive head first into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore. Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.”

The modern updating of the classic Addams Family franchise, the Jenna Ortega starring show has been a smash-hit for the streamer, ranking at number two on Netflix’s list of top English language shows, with 1.237 Billion hours viewed within its first 28 days based on Netflix’s internal metrics. Even externally, though, the show has been massive: in Nielsen’s most recent Top 10, for the week of December 5 through 11, the independent research firm highlighted that Wednesday had 3.3 billion viewing minutes for the week, two billion more than the second highest ranking show. And on TikTok, spurred on by a viral dance trend to Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary,” the #WednesdayAddams tag has amassed over 22 billion views.

So while a second season seems like a no-brainer, it still took a while since the show’s November 23 release date for Netflix to announce the pick-up of the MGM Television produced show. So long, in fact, that during a slow news day over New Year’s weekend, a spurious report suggested that because MGM is now owned by Amazon, the series could go to Prime Video for Season 2. That was idle speculation most likely fueled by copious leftover champagne and vacationing editors, but it’s hard not to speculate (again, idly) that the uproar over this fake report might have given Netflix a gentle nudge to shut down the rumors by officially announcing Season 2.

Regardless of why Netflix announced the pick-up, it’s now official that one of their biggest shows of all time will be back for a second season, and finally we’ll get all the answers fans have been craving, like: who are those brown-haired boys, and why can’t I tell them apart?

Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the first four episodes were directed by living legend Tim Burton, who set the tone for the supernatural infused series. Set at private school Nevermore Academy, Season 1 found Wednesday (Ortega) encountering various teen creatures, solving mysteries, and grappling with her newfound psychic abilities. The first season also starred Emma Myers as Wednesday’s perky roommate and only viable romantic interest Enid Sinclair, as well as Gwendoline Christie, Jamie McShane, Percy Hynes White, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Naomi J Ogawa, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Riki Lindhome, with Christina Ricci and guest stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Fred Arimisen and Isaac Ordonez.

No details have been released at this point about a second season of Wednesday, including returning cast, plot, production dates, premiere date, or behind-the-scenes creatives. However, expect Jenna Ortega to be back, if no-one else.
