‘Elvis’ Director Baz Luhrmann Honors Lisa Marie Presley After “Shocking” Death: “We Will Miss Your Warmth”

Baz Luhrmann and Tom Hanks are paying tribute to Lisa Marie Presley after working closely with the late singer-songwriter on Elvis. Lisa Marie, the only daughter of Elvis Presley, died on Thursday (Jan. 12) at 54 from reported cardiac arrest.

Luhrmann, who directed the 2022 biopic about Lisa Marie’s famous father, shared in a statement posted to social media today,  “Over the last year, the entire Elvis movie family and I have felt the privilege of Lisa Marie’s kind embrace.”

He continued, “Her sudden, shocking loss has devastated people all around the world.”

The post was accompanied by an image of Lisa Marie and Austin Butler, who portrayed the eponymous character in Elvis, smiling on a couch.

Tom Hanks, who starred in Luhrmann’s movie as Colonel Tom Parker, grieved the loss of Lisa Marie in a joint statement with his wife, Rita Wilson. “Our hearts are broken with the sudden and shocking passing of Lisa Marie Presley tonight,” the two wrote on Instagram.

They continued to open up about their shared experience with Lisa Marie, saying they spent “some time” with the Presley family during the movie’s promotional tour. “Lisa Marie was so honest and direct, vulnerable, in a state of anticipation about the movie. She spoke so eloquently about her father, what the movie meant to her, that it was a celebration of her dad,” they wrote.

At this week’s 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Butler took home the gold for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his portrayal of the King of Rock and Roll. The actor thanked members of Elvis’s family in his acceptance speech.

“The Presley family, thank you guys, thank you for opening your hearts, your memories, your home to me,” the actor expressed at the Tuesday (Jan. 10) ceremony. Butler gave a specific shout-out to Lisa Marie and her mother, saying, “Lisa Marie, Priscilla, I love you forever.”

Lisa Marie appeared at the event just days ago, where she was photographed at Butler’s side.
