‘Rick and Morty’ Co-Creator Justin Roiland Charged With Domestic Violence

Justin Roiland, the star and co-creator of Adult Swim show Rick and Morty, faces charges of domestic violence as the result of an complaint filed by an unknown woman stemming from an incident in 2020. The identity of the woman has not been revealed.

According to the criminal complaint first reported by NBC News, Roiland was been charged in Orange County, Calif. with with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit.

The charges were filed by the anonymous woman Roiland was dating at the time when the incident took place in January 2020. Roiland was officially charged and arrested in May 2020, and released on $50,000 bond that August.

He was later arraigned in October 2020, the same month that a protective order was filed by the victim, which stated that Roiland is not to harass, threaten or surveil her, nor go within 100 feet of her. Roiland has maintained his innocence since the charges were first filed in 2020. Another hearing has been set for April 27.

In a statement, his lawyer T. Edward Welbourn wrote, “We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible.”

Despite the accusations, Roiland has continued to work on Rick and Morty, as well as the Hulu animated shows Solar Opposites and the new series Koala Man, which premiered last week. He also runs the video game studio Squanch Games.
