HBO Max Says XOXO to ‘Gossip Girl’ Revival After 2 Seasons

Sorry, Upper East Siders. It looks like the Gossip Girl reboot has come to an end after just two seasons. Executive producer and showrunner Joshua Safran, who also acted as an EP on the original series, confirmed the unfortunate news in a series of tweets.

“So here’s the goss: it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce GOSSIP GIRL will not be continuing on HBO Max,” he wrote today. “The EPs and I will forever be grateful to the network and studio for their faith and support; the writers for their devious brains and dexterous talent; the superstar cast for being the greatest of collaborators and friends; and the crew for their hard work, dedication, and love for the project.”

Fortunately, it may not be goodbye forever. Safran, who said Gossip Girl was “the greatest set” he’s “ever worked on, top to bottom,” told his followers that they are ” currently looking for another home” for the show. While he said relocating the series “in this climate” may be an “uphill battle,” we are hopeful that there will be a future for the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite.

Safran added, “If this is the end, at least we went out on the highest of highs. Thank you for watching, and I hope you’ll tune into the finale next Thursday to see how it all comes together. xoxo.”

Gossip Girl is based on the original series of the same name, which aired for six seasons from 2007 to 2012. Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chase Crawford and Ed Westwick were among the star-studded cast. The revival, which premiered its first season in the summer of 2021 and its second in late 2022, follows a new group of rich private school kids as the gossip blog is brought back nearly a decade after going silent.

The series stars Jordan Alexander, Whitney Peak, Thomas Doherty and Emily Alyn Lind as part of its ensemble cast. It also brought back familiar faces like Michelle Trachtenberg, who played notorious mean-girl Georgina Sparks in the OG show.

You can stream the final episode of Gossip Girl when it releases on Thursday, Jan. 26 on HBO Max.
