Netflix’s NC-17 Marilyn Monroe Biopic ‘Blonde’ Leads 2023 Razzies With 8 Nominations

The 2023 Golden Raspberry Award nominations have been released and streamers are taking “a big L.” Netflix’s Blonde led the pack with eight nominations and Disney’s Pinocchio followed with six. With any other awards show, the more nominations, the better, right? Not with the Razzies given that the organization seeks to recognize the worst in the industry.

Andrew Dominik’s biographical movie received nominations for Worst Picture, Worst Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel, Worst Supporting Actor for Evan Williams and Xavier Samuel, and Worst Director and Worst Screenplay for Dominik.

The Razzies also included a joke at Dominik’s expense, nominating the movie in the Worst Couple category for Dominik and “His Issues with Women” and “Both Real Life Characters in the Fallacious White House Bedroom Scene.”

Ana de Armas, who portrayed Marilyn Monroe, remained unscathed as she is often credited for being the most enjoyable part of the movie.

While Blonde has been critically panned, Armas continues to gain recognition for her challenging role at award shows, having been nominated for Best Actress by the Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actor Guild Awards, and British Academy film Awards. Oscar nominations have yet to go live, but Armas has made her way onto many prediction lists, including one by Variety.

The organization wrote in a statement, that Blonde “‘explores’ the exploitation of Marilyn Monroe…by continuing to exploit her posthumously,” and Dominik’s work “ says more about him than it does about his subject.”

Disney’s Pinnochio adaptation, which released exclusively on Disney+, is the third most nominated movie, having bagged nods in Worst Picture, Worst Actor for Tom Hanks, Worst Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel, Worst Supporting Actor for Lorraine Bracco, Worst Director for Robert Zemeckis, and Worst Screenplay for Zemeckis and Chris Weitz.

Netflix’s The Bubble also gets an honorary mention, having been nominated in Worst Director for Judd Apatow.

The 43rd Annual Golden Raspberry Awards will occur on “Oscar’s Eve” a.k.a. March 11.
