New Movies On Streaming: ‘Skinamarink’ + More

In Home Alone, young Kevin McCallister could not have been happier to learn that his family went on vacation without him: “I made my parents disappear – eyebrow eyebrow!” Skinamarink, which is one of this week’s new movies on VOD, takes that idea of disappearing parents and turns it into pure horror, with the mysterious and terrifying vanishing of the parents of two young kids. If you do not delight in low-budget horror, and you happen to have one moment (in time) to spare, you can also check out the Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, which was released on VOD this week, too.

And if you love Olivia Colman (who among us doesn’t?) her latest film, Empire of Light, is now streaming. The Sam Mendes-directed film is a romantic drama between two people trying to make sense of the world, Colman plays Hilary, a depressed woman struggling with a troubled life, who finds comfort with her new employee Stephen (Micheal Ward). Hilary manages a movie theater and Stephen is her employee, this also helps set up the fact that the film is also a tribute to cinema and the escapism it affords us all. Set in 1980, the film references several movies that were new that year and immerses its own characters in a world where cinema is a vital part of their lives.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Skinamarink

It’s every parents’ nightmare, being separated from your kids and unable to help them, and that’s the creepy premise of Skinamarink, the lowwwww-budget horror film that recently came out on Shudder and is now widely available of streaming. Two young kids, Kaylee and Kevin, awaken in the middle of the night to realize that their father – and every door and window to their home – has disappeared. As they endure the blackness and solitude, they hear voices telling them to do increasingly dangerous things, and we the audience spend the whole time trying to decipher the who, what, and of how that led them here.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody

I Wanna Dance With Somebody is the story of Whitney Houston’s life, which was cut too short in 2012, and features all of her greatest hits, both musically and personally. British actress Naomi Ackie plays Houston (though admittedly, she did not try to recreate Houston’s singing voice in the film, a task most mortals are not able to do), and the film is the story of both her struggles and her achievements. Though it only barely scratches the surface of Houston as a person, it still gives us an opportunity to relish her talent and lament that she left us way too soon.
