Your Place or Mine, the new movie starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher that began streaming on Netflix today, takes place in two of the most-utilized locations in romantic comedy history: New York City, and Los Angeles.

Written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna, Your Place or Mine stars Witherspoon as a neurotic single mother, Debbie, who needs to spend a week in New York City, away from her son, in order to finish up her business degree. When her babysitter falls through, her platonic BFF Peter (Ashton Kutcher) offers to spend the week at her house in Los Angeles, while Debbie spends a week at Peter’s bachelor pad in New York. Though they spend the week in separate cities, they end up falling in love.

Obviously, the cities were very important to the premise of Your Place or Mine—almost as important as the characters. But where was Your Place or Mine actually filmed? Read on to learn about the Your Place or Mine filming locations.

Where was Your Place or Mine filmed?

Your Place or Mine was filmed on location in New York City and Los Angeles.

For the exterior shots outside Peter’s New York City bachelor pad, the production found a street in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Dumbo. Production designer Bill Arnold described the location in an interview for the Your Place or Mine press notes, saying, “Dumbo, once an area of old waterfront warehouse buildings, has transformed into million-dollar lofts and condos. It’s a very hip and trendy place, which Peter would be attracted to. At the last minute, we found this very beautiful building that would allow us to film inside their lobby and on their garden roof deck while the city would permit us to film outside on the sidewalks.”

For the inside of Peter’s apartment, the production built a set. (So, no, that is not a real view from his apartment windows. Shocking, I know.) “It’s a striking location right between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges and we wanted to take advantage of that in our set,” Arnold said. “We determined what floor he was living on and what he saw out of his window. What kind of architecture? Is it a brick building, or is it steel?”

For the exterior of Debbie’s LA home, the production found a house in the neighborhood of Echo Park. In the same interview for the production notes, writer/director Aline Brosh McKenna said, “Veronique Vowell, our location manager, found Debbie’s house which is in Echo Park at the top of one of the iconic 100-step hillside walkways. Debbie bought the house in her 20s so there are all those layers that make it cozy and inhabited. We filmed the exterior at the actual house and garden, then Bill built the interior on stage. We even duplicated the garden on stage.”

So, as with Peter’s apartment, the inside of Debbie’s house was built on a soundstage—meaning you can’t move in any time soon. Sorry! The scene where Debbie and Peter reunite at LAX was also filmed on a sound stage, rather than at the actual airport. But rebuilding an entire airport called for a really big sound stage. The production ended up using a Hollywood stage that was originally built for The Three Stooges.

Director of photography Florian Ballhaus explained, “That final scene really was a bit of a challenge. It’s a long, two-and-a-half-page scene on the moving sidewalk with hundreds of background artists milling about. Considering the restrictions at real airports, building the set at the studio was the correct way to go, although we were concerned because it just barely fit on the stage. We only had a few inches on either side for us to jam the lighting in.”

So there you have it! Your Place or Mine was filmed in New York and Los Angeles locations for the exteriors, and on sound stages sprinkled with movie magic for the interiors.
