Anybody else seeing double? DC Studios has released the first trailer for The Flash, a movie which CEO James Gunn has already dubbed “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.” The nearly three-minute video, released ahead of the 2023 Super Bowl, didn’t hold back, both in its heavy promotion of its controversial lead Ezra Miller and the exciting storylines it’s bound to tell, including the return of Michael Keaton as Batman.

The synopsis teases, “Worlds collide in The Flash when Barry (Miller) uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to.”

This dangerous twist of events leads the eponymous character to seek out Keaton’s Batman, who has since retired. DC continues, “Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?”

In addition to Keaton, who portrayed Batman in 1989’s Batman and its sequel Batman Returns, there’s a scene between Barry and Ben Affleck’s masked crusader. Obviously this has set Twitter aflame with comments about the legend’s anticipated arrival.

“That’s my Batman,” exclaimed writer Michael Patterson in response to Keaton’s return.

Another fan got sentimental, writing, “Seeing Michael Keaton back as Batman makes me ETERNALLY grateful that my father is still here! The OG Batman film in ’89 was the 1st movie he ever took me to, I was 6 months old! Fast forward 34 years and he and I will be seeing The Flash together!”

Journalist Nicole Drum wrote, “I cannot stress to you how much I just freaked out at hearing Michael Keaton say “I’m Batman” in The Flash trailer. Keaton is the Batman I first came to love and was my gateway drug to the character.”

Along with Miller, Keaton, and Affleck, The Flash sees the return of Michael Shannon as General Zod, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West and Antje Traue as villainess Faora. Sasha Calle, Ron Livingston, and Maribel Verdú also star.

The Flash is set to premiere theatrically in North America on June 16, 2023 and internationally on June 14, 2023.
