Season two of the award-winning show Abbott Elementary is in full swing, and its charming characters and hilarious plot lines continue to warm viewer’s hearts.
Never watched the show? Abbott Elementary is a mockumentary-style sitcom about a predominantly Black public elementary school in Philiadelphia. It stars Quinta Brunson (who is also the creator of the show) as Janine Teagues, an optimistic second grade teacher who, despite lack of funding and the politics of the school district, will do everything she can to help her students succeed. Abbott Elementary also stars Tyler James Williams and Sheryl Lee Ralph as equally dedicated teachers, and Janelle James as the school’s incompetent, but hilarious principal.
But let’s say you have watched the show, and the wait between episodes is worse than the agonizing hours until the bell rings at the end of the school day. If so, you’re probably looking for more shows to check out right now. From ridiculous comedies like Mr. Iglesias to heartwarming stories like Derry Girls, these seven shows are sure to get an A+ in your gradebook if you’re a fan of Abbott Elementary.
A.P. Bio (2018)
While A.P. Bio takes place in a high school honors class instead of an underfunded elementary school, it has similarly absurd scenarios and laugh-out-loud dialogue. The bingeable sitcom follows a disgruntled Harvard professor (Glen Howerton) as he returns to his midwestern hometown to teach high school biology.
A Black Lady Sketch Show (2019)
If you can’t get enough of Quinta Brunson, creater and star of Abbott Elementary, check out her other show A Black Lady Sketch Show. The hit comedy series, which has been renewed for a fourth season, features hilarious characters and memorable sketches. Notably, A Black Lady Sketch Show is the first TV series to have a writer’s room of all Black women.
Ted Lasso (2020)
If you love the Abbott Elementary characters who are so wholesomely dedicated to their jobs, then Ted Lasso is for you. Ted Lasso is the newly-hired manager of a British soccer team. The only catch? He is an American football coach who seems to know nothing about England or soccer. Lasso’s optimistic leadership and endearing attitude is sure to be a hit with Abbott Elementary viewers.
Superstore (2015)
Another workplace sitcom, Superstore follows an eccentric group of employees at a big-box store. The lovable characters make this eerily accurate satire a fun watch. Like Abbott Elementary, Superstore blends comedy and social commentary in a way that is effective, while still fun and entertaining.
Derry Girls (2018)
Derry Girls is centered around a group of teenagers growing up in Northern Ireland during The Troubles in the ’90s. The coming-of-age comedy is a powerful exploration of adolescence and what it means to grow up in a turbulent environment. Like Abbott Elementary, this show reminds us to find the beauty and humor in every day life.
Vice Principals (2017)
While Vice Principals characters Neal Gamby (Danny McBride) and Lee Russell (Walton Goggins) are pretty much the opposite of Abbott Elementary’s Janine Teagues (Quina Brunson), the shows have the same charming and comedic tone. Vice Principals follows two vice principals as the vie for the newly open principal job, despite both being extremely unlikable.
Mr. Iglesias (2019)
Mr. Iglesias is a hiliarious sitcom starring stand-up comedian Gabrial “Fluffy” Iglesias as a beloved high school teacher. Like the teachers in Abbott Elementary, Mr. Iglesias dedicates his life to helping students succeed, despite the odds being stacked against them.
