As the 2023 Oscars quickly approach, more and more of the best picture-nominated movies are being released on video-on-demand (VOD) streaming services. If you’re a completionist or just have your eye on a few, it’s getting easier to watch the nominees from your couch. The most recent is The Whale, which hit VOD platforms today, February 21.

The Whale is Darren Aronofsky’s first film since 2017’s mother! and is an adaptation of Samuel D. Hunter’s play of the same name. Brendan Fraser stars as Charlie, a morbidly obese and reclusive English professor hoping for one more chance to redeem his fractured relationship with his teenage daughter. It features supporting performances from Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton.

The film was initially released in theaters on December 9. Since then, it’s become a somewhat polarizing film in the Oscar race, sitting at 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, which aggregates and averages reviews. It received three Oscar nominations: Fraser for Best Actor, Chau for Best Supporting Actress, and Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Anne Marie Bradley for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Now, 74 days after it hit theaters, you can finally watch The Whale at home. Read on for everything you need to know about streaming the new movie.
