It’s hard to imagine Stranger Things coming to an end after its nine-year reign on Netflix, but one of its stars seems to think it might be time.

In a new interview with Discussing Film, David Harbour, who stars as Jim Hopper, opened up about how “bittersweet” it feels to be approaching the end of the iconic show. But, according to the actor, it might be “time for it to end.”

“What’s funny is when I started the show, I never ever wanted it to end. That’s why I love the show. I think it’s a great show, even if I wasn’t in it. Now we’re almost nine years from filming the first season, and I think it is time for it to end,” Harbour said. “But it is, of course, very bittersweet. You know, there’s a sadness there.”

Stranger Things first premiered on Netflix in 2016. The hit show would go on to break Netflix records – and even the streaming platform itself, as so many viewers tuned into the 2022 premiere of Season 4 that over 14,000 Netflix outages were recorded. But we can’t ignore the fact that the show’s iconic status is largely thanks to its brilliant cast, some of whom have been on the show since they were twelve or thirteen years old.

STRANGER THINGS 4 EP 2 HARBOUR ALIVE

This isn’t lost on Harbour. “We have to get going because the kids are growing up, we got to shoot this thing!” he exclaimed.

“We’ve all grown up. It is time for us to leave that nest and try other things and different projects,” the actor went on to say. Harbour, who stars in the upcoming comedy We Have a Ghost, will be “running back and forth between sets in Atlanta” this summer to film both Stranger Things Season 5 and Marvel’s Thunderbolts.

“It’s going to be a hell of a summer. It’s going to be just a lot of work, but it’s a blessing,” he says. “You know, I’m doing two amazing projects. So I’m fine with being exhausted.”

But don’t fret. This might be the end of Stranger Things but a spinoff from the show creators  is already in the works. According to the Duffer Brothers, “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things.”
