The Whale

Powered by Reelgood

Some weeks are better than others when it comes to the quality and quantity of new releases on VOD, and this week, we’re in for quite a few big titles. Among them, we’ve got Darren Aronofsky’s Oscar-nominated film The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser and the latest from M. Night Shyamalan, the doomsday thriller Knock At The Cabin, where Dave Bautista and his head wrinkles try to stave off the apocalypse… by telling a family to kill one another.

Also out this week is Women Talking, a film based on real-life events that occurred in an isolated Mennonite community in Bolivia, where the men of the colony had been secretly anesthetizing many of the women and raping them in their sleep. The women, upon learning this, gather in a secret meeting to determine how they should respond to the men’s actions, and whether to fight back. The film, based on a novel by Miriam Toews, was written and directed by Sarah Polley and stars Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, and Rooney Mara as three of the women in the community.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

The Whale

If you’re in the mood to watch one of the more controversial, but critically acclaimed films of awards season, you can check out The Whale on demand this week. Brendan Fraser, who has already won several awards for his performance in the film, is up for an Oscar for the role of Charlie, a morbidly obese English professor who is desperate to reconnect with the teenage daughter (Sadie Sink) he has lost touch with. Hong Chau, who is also up for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the film, plays Liz, Charlie’s friend and caretaker. Though the film’s portrayal of Charlie has been called fatphobic, you can decide for yourself how you feel about it now that it’s available to stream.

Knock At The Cabin

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, Knock At The Cabin, is yet another of his creepy, twisty psychological nightmares. In the film, Dave Bautista plays the leader of a group of four violent doomsday-prepper types who break into a cabin where a family, young Wen (Kristen Cui) and her fathers, Andrew and Eric (Ben Aldridge and Jonathan Groff) are vacationing. The family is told that the apocalypse is upon them, and unless they choose to sacrifice one of the three members of their family, the entire world will be consumed by death and destruction. The family initially believes the whole thing to be a hoax created by their unhinged captors, until the world actually does start to collapse.
