Savannah Guthrie is following in the footsteps of her co-host Hoda Kotb and dropping from The Today Show. Guthrie left this morning’s live broadcast suddenly after learning she tested positive for COVID-19.

The morning show host arrived at work “not feeling great,” her co-host Sheinelle Jones explained, and once she took a COVID test, the results were unfortunately positive.

“It has been an interesting morning for us,” Jones said, before adding, “As soon as we found out [the results], she rushed home to rest up. So Savannah, we love you, wishing you a speedy recovery.”

Al Roker, who was standing beside her as she shared the news, jokingly shuffled further and further from Jones as she spoke. He quipped, “Luckily, Sheinelle was sitting between me and Savannah.”

In a clip from this morning’s episode of Today posted to the show’s YouTube channel, Guthrie’s voice sounds slightly raspy as she reports on President Joe Biden‘s student loan forgiveness plan.

She signed off from the show shortly after; a report posted to the Today website confirms that Guthrie “did not appear on TODAY after 7:30 a.m. ET following her positive test.”

The results are certainly a bummer for Today fans and Guthrie’s co-workers, and her positive test marks the third time the anchor has contracted COVID-19 since the start of 2022. Guthrie previously tested positive for the virus in January 2022, and later again in May, when she was forced to stay home for five days.

With Guthrie out at Today, the show is now missing both halves of its morning duo. Kotb, who typically co-hosts Today alongside Guthrie, has been missing from the morning show since Feb. 17, when she appeared on her most recent broadcast.

Fans have expressed concern for the host, who has not shared an official update or statement explaining her absence, but has been posting inspirational quotes and messages on Instagram in the meantime.

The Today Show airs weekdays at 7 a.m. ET on NBC. Watch Jones’ full announcement from this morning in the video above.
