“Alright, cowboy. Go get ’em!” With those five outrageously flirtatious words, Eddie (Ryan Guzman) strapped Buck (Oliver Stark) into a harness and watched him climb the 118’s ladder in 9-1-1‘s 2023 premiere. Unfortunately, nothing prepared either of them — or fans! — for what happened next.

In Season 6, Episode 10, “In a Flash,” the team spent the day responding to dry thunder storm-related emergencies. But the most unexpected tragedy came in the episode’s final moments, when Buck climbed that ladder to hose down an apartment fire and was struck by a massive lightning bolt. The episode ended with him getting driven away in an ambulance, and since he didn’t have a pulse, fans are fearfully wondering whether Buck dies in 9-1-1. While viewers anxiously anticipate next week’s episode, they’re also struggling to recover from the episode’s electric, heartbreaking Buddie scenes that mirrored past Buck and Eddie moments from the series.

Since 9-1-1 dropped an episode teaser that showed Eddie calling out for Buck, fans have been gushing over the sheer Buddie of the scene. But watching Eddie bounce back from his own lightning strike to race up the ladder, seeing his face fall, and hearing him scream “BUCK” over and over again in the episode reminded fans of just how much these two characters care for each other.

When asked if he and Guzman were aware that this scene marked the first time Eddie ran yelling towards Buck, Stark told Hello! Magazine, “Eddie, as we’ve seen over the years, has been more of a stoic character, and it’s nice to see that broken when Buck is put in this position. But I don’t think that’s necessarily something that we have purposely played into here, it’s just the nature of the scene that this is literally life and death.”

“[Eddie is] going to have a chance, particularly in the next episode, to really break out his shell a little bit in terms of dealing with his emotions,” the actor shared with Us Magazine. “We’ve always seen him as quite a stoic character. He’s always kept himself in check and tried to be in command of those emotions. And every now and then he’s seen that breakthrough. For example, when he smashed off his bedroom and was dealing with his PTSD. But for the most part, he’s always been somebody who’s tried to stuff those emotions down. It’s nice to see him start to break out of that shell cause of his care for Buck and for those around him.”

Intentional or not, 9-1-1 fans are understandably unwell after the emotional roller coaster of an episode. We dare you to watch these scenes without sobbing!

We’ll have to wait and see how things play out for Buck and Eddie later in the season, but judging by Stark’s comments and the previews for next week’s episode, Buddie fans are definitely not out of the woods yet.

New episodes of 9-1-1 air Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. Episodes are available for next-day streaming on Hulu.
