Elon Musk Doc in the Works From Investigative Filmmaker Alex Gibney

Just days after Elon Musk reclaimed (and once again lost) his title as the richest person in the world, famed filmmaker Alex Gibney announced he is producing a documentary on the controversial billionaire.

“I have been working on this film, off and on, for some time and am hugely excited about it,” Gibney said, per Deadline. “I am delighted by this extraordinary group who are working with me. Onward!”

Gibney will certainly have his work cut out for him. Musk is currently the CEO of private space exploration company SpaceX, the electric car manufacturer Tesla and, most recently, Twitter, among many other job titles he maintains. According to Bloomberg, the businessman has a net worth of $187.1 billion, but has been duking it out with fellow multi-billionaires Bernard Arnault and Jeff Bezos for the title of richest man in the world.

Musk has become a polarizing figure after making many controversial statements about politics, COVID-19 and more, especially since he took over Twitter in late 2022.

Deadline described the project, entitled Musk, as a “definitive and unvarnished examination” of the entrepreneur. Gibney made his name making similarly thorough documentaries on public figures such as Julian Assange, Steve Jobs and Elizabeth Holmes. He won an Academy Award for best documentary for his 2007 film Taxi to the Dark Side, which uncovered the haunting interrogation tactics the United States of America used during the War in Afghanistan.

Gibney’s production company Jigsaw Productions — which is also the company behind Money Shot: The Pornhub Story coming to Netflix on March 15 — will be producing the film alongside Closer Media, Double Agent and Anonymous Content.

Though Gibney says he has been working on this documentary “for some time,” a premiere date has not been announced.
