The explosive Last of Us finale that aired Sunday night (March 12) definitely left viewers wanting more. But, like fans of the video game who waited seven years for their sequel, it’ll likely be some time before we see Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprising their roles on our television screens.

This first season remained quite faithful to the video game that inspired it. So, should we expect the same from Season 2? The Last of Us co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin recently revealed that Season 2 will be an even bigger production than the first. In an interview with GQ, the creators confirmed that the video game sequel will be adapted into “more than one season” of television.

They were pretty tight-lipped about what to expect. Though the show has already been renewed for one more season, Mazin said there was “no way” Season 2 could include the entire story from The Last of Us Part II. Neither creator confirmed just how many seasons it would take to adapt it.

“Some of the stuff I’m most excited for [in Part 2] are the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version,” said Druckmann, who co-created and wrote the game. “And I think it’s exciting because it leans into those feelings you had from the game, really heavily, in a new way.”

The video game sequel takes place five years after the first installment, which means Mazin and Druckmann have a lot of fertile ground to explore in Season 2 outside from the sequel’s already huge story.

“It’s a daunting task. But Jesus, so was the first season,” Mazin said. “You can’t make everyone happy. But we’ve made a lot of people happy and that’s our intention to do it again.”

The two appear hopeful and confident going into Season 2. Druckmann said they “don’t care” about how fans will react to the next season after receiving some negative reactions to the video game’s sequel.

“How they react is how they react, that is completely outside of our control. So how do we make the best TV show version of that story? That’s the problem that we wrestle with every day,” he said.

It sounds like we can expect The Last Of Us Season 2 (and however many seasons that follow) to be just as dramatic and stressful as the first.

Luckily, fans of the show can use this waiting period as a chance to catch up on the games.

This may spoil the second season for viewers, but Mazin and Druckmann seem like they still have some tricks up their sleeve to surprise us.
