Shadow and Bone Season 2 only just hit Netflix today but series showrunner Eric Heisserer has some big news for Leigh Bardugo fans: a Six of Crows spin-off series is already in the works.

Heisserer and his co-showrunner Daegan Fryklind unpacked Season 2’s events and how it could connect to the plans they have for the spin-off in a new (spoilery) interview

According to Heisserer, the Shadow and Bone writers worked simultaneously on writing Season 2 and developing the spin-off. The series, which has not gotten the green light yet, is expected to adapt the main storyline of Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology. Heisserer says all eight episodes of the spin-off’s first season have already been written.

“We are ready to launch that as its own story,” he said. “The eight-episode scripts are phenomenal and I’m really proud of my team for those.”

Netflix viewership for Season 2, however, could determine if the streaming platform will give them the go ahead.

The spin-off “would be its own little season of fun that our characters would get to be a part of,” Heisserer said. The co-showrunners seem to be planning to run both series on Netflix simultaneously.

According to the showrunners, the new series would line up with the events of the Season 2 finale. Heisserer also revealed that they have already begun incorporating some aspects of the story into Shadow and Bone Season 2. The new series could give them the opportunity to “go deeper” and give more characters “their own real estate” on the shows.

“The only rule that we had internally was make sure we have something at least as strong, if not more exciting, for us to replace it whenever we move something around,” Heisserer said.

Six of Crows is a hit on TikTok and #1 New York Times bestseller but, given Netflix’s history of canceling shows, there’s no telling if the Shadow and Bone crew will get to develop the spin-off for now.

If this doesn’t pan out, there’s plenty more where that came from. Just this week, Bardugo signed an eight-figure deal with Macmillan Publishers for twelve more books across a “variety of formats, age categories and genres.”

Shadow and Bone Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
