The first official trailer for Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is full of Bridgerton Easter eggs, references to the budding “madness” of young King George (Corey Mylchreest), and a promise that, yes, there will be sex in the prequel series. The first Bridgerton spin-off is being written and showrun by none other than Shonda Rhimes herself and should be just the steamy, dreamy romance we’ll need to tie us over until Bridgerton Season 3 premieres later this year.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a prequel series designed to fill audiences in on the real life love story that shaped Regency England. A generation before Bridgerton, a young German princess named Charlotte (India Amarteifio) was brought to England to wed King George. The monarch had grown up under the strict guidance of his widowed mother, the Princess Augusta (Michelle Fairley). In real life, the marriage of George and Charlotte would be mostly a huge success. The two fell in love and had fifteen children. And George’s grief over the deaths of some of those children are now considered to be catalysts for his later mental health breakdowns. Needless to say, theirs is a match primed for a soapy dramatization.

The nearly three minute-long trailer for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story teases Charlotte’s arrival to England, her meet-cute with George, and introduction to the young version of Lady Danbury, played by Arsema Thomas. We get a glimpse of the young royals’ wedding, various balls, and candlelit love scenes. However, as the older version of Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) recounts, all was not well. In addition to having to lay the foundation for Bridgerton‘s fantasy post-racial version of Regency England, Charlotte also needed to contend with her beloved George’s…secrets. That is, his mental health struggles.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story will premiere on Netflix on May 4, 2023.

Now, Netflix, can we get some Polin first looks or what?
