Apple TV+‘s latest tearjerker, Dear Edward, ended on a high note with a hopeful Season 1 finale that leaves fans wanting more.

For 10 episodes, the series expands on Ann Napolitano’s 2020 novel of the same name, telling the story of a 12-year-old boy called Edward who becomes the sole survivor of a plane crash that killed everyone else onboard, including his parents and brother. We watch Edward, his aunt and uncle, and a group of other grievers as they work to process the tragedy, support each other, and attempt to move forward.

If you have yet to watch the Season 1 finale and want to avoid spoilers, consider this your chance to stop reading. But if you’ve watched the grief group’s goodbye party and that unexpected cliffhanger, you’re likely wondering if Dear Edward will return for a second season.

When chatting with Dear Edward creator, showrunner, executive producer, and writer Jason Katims about the Season 1 finale, Decider asked him all about a potential Season 2. Here’s what he had to say about the future of the Apple TV+ series, along with storylines Dear Edward might explore down the line.

Will There Be a Dear Edward Season 2 on Apple TV+? Creator Jason Katims Weighs In:

As of Dear Edward‘s finale premiere day, Apple TV+ has yet to renew or cancel the drama starring Connie Britton, Taylor Schilling, and more. But that’s not to say there won’t be a Season 2. It’s not uncommon for streamers to a wait a while after a finale airs to announce more episodes, and with hits like Friday Night Light and Parenthood under his belt, who wouldn’t want more Katims TV?

When chatting with Decider, the creator explained he’d love to make more Dear Edward episodes. He’s just waiting for the green light. “I definitely have designed the show to be an ongoing show,” he confirmed. “…That said, you know, we don’t know. I want to go on with the show. Obviously, it’s not up to me. We’re waiting to hear if that’s where we are.”

So what could a second season of the drama look like now that grief group has ended and some of the core characters have left New York? Katims has some ideas.

What Could Happen in Dear Edward Season 2?

The obvious Season 2 storyline would be a continuation of Season 1’s cliffhanger, when Edward reads a letter from a stranger who claims to be his uncle. But Edward isn’t the only character Katims will keep up with should Apple TV+ renew the series. “Certainly having that morsel at the end is a suggestion of, you know, there’s more stories to tell. But I think even beyond the sort of getting a letter and having a literal cliffhanger like that, I just think these characters are all so alive,” he told Decider. “One of the things that I love about the show is this community that’s formed of people who’ve never would have known each other, you know? Who have now, out of these tragic circumstances, become sort of an extended family. And romantic relationships have been formed and deep friendships have been formed. So if we get a Season 2, I would be excited to continue to follow these characters on their paths.”

One central relationship that Dear Edward Season 1 left up in the air was the fate of Lacey (Schilling) and John’s (Carter Hudson) marriage. They were still separated in the finale, and when the series jumps forward 10 weeks John isn’t seen at the table with Lacey, Edward, Shay, Linda, and the baby. So in Season 2, we would also get more clarity on where they’re at as a couple.

“That relationship and that marriage is complicated. And it was complicated before all this happened with Edward. In the pilot you saw there was a lot of friction and tension between them. And one of the things that I really love about telling that story is to tell a story about any complicated relationship there’s certainly so much love there, but they also might not always be the the best for each other,” Katims explained. “We’re ending Season 1 with them having this separation that I think they need to have in order for them to figure out for themselves who they are and what they want. But while they’re separated it’s not like their relationship — like anybody who gets separated — is over. And I do think there’s a lot of love between them, so I think Season 2 would be about watching them. And not to say that they would get together get back together or not, but we would continue to follow the story of the two of them — and not only the marriage, but also being guardians for Edward.”
