The View kicked off Friday morning with a chat about TikTok, the hottest — and most controversial — social media app these days. The panel launched into a conversation about ethics and parenting following TikTok CEO  Shou Zi Chew’s March 23 appearance in Congress, where he was questioned by both sides of the aisle amidst a possible TikTok ban in the U.S.

Sunny Hostin, a mom of two, shared her own approach to monitoring her children’s social media accounts — arguing it’s up to parents, not the government, to decide what kids can and cannot access.

“I fear government overreach, and I know that sounds strange because I’m generally not a limited government person,” Hostin began. “But I think this is a parental issue.”

She continued, “If you have children — and I’m right in the middle of this because I have a 16-year-old girl and a 20-year-old boy — you can go right onto your iPhone, ’cause you pay for it ’cause they don’t have jobs. And you go to Screen Time and you block out certain apps.”

Hostin explained to the panel, “You can do this yourself without the law being involved,” before mentioning her own daughter, Paloma, who “cannot be on certain apps after 8 o’clock.”

“When I first started putting these sort of limitations on it, it was like she was having a heart attack. And I was like, that makes me more worried because you’re addicted to it then,” Hostin said.

When her daughter protested Hostin’s control over her phone, the talk show host said she replied, “I’m sorry, do you pay the bill? So it’s not your phone.”

As for Paloma’s brother, Hostin said he got “the same thing,” even though he’s now in college.

“Sometimes I change some of those things,” she said, referring to parental controls, before adding, “But he doesn’t have access necessarily to porn on his phone because I don’t think he needs access to that, because I think that leads to toxic masculinity.”

She added, “You kind of have to parent, and it’s not easy to say no, but there aren’t enough parents saying no.”

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
