Is Quibi To Blame For Reese Witherspoon’s Divorce? (Quite Possibly!)

Reese Witherspoon is one of the most successful women in Hollywood, so when she recently announced her divorce after 12 years of marriage to Jim Toth, the news was met with equal measures of surprise and “Girl, you’ll be juuust fine on your own.” When the pair married, Toth was an agent at Creative Artist’s Agency and worked closely with celebrities like Scarlett Johansson and Matthew McConaughey, but in 2019, he “pivoted to video” as we say in the biz, deciding to leave his career as an agent to become head of content acquisitions and talent at Quibi, the short-lived streaming platform.

To refresh your memory, Quibi was promoted heavily in the lead-up to its April 2020 launch as the “next generation of storytelling” (per its co-creator Jeffrey Katzenberg) and promised loads of short-form content from A-list celebrity creators like Joe Jonas, Chrissy Teigen, and Liam Hemsworth. Unfortunately, almost no one signed up for the service, which led to its demise in December 2020 after less than a year of service.

A report out today on Radar Online suggests that Toth’s career switch to the failed streamer was a harbinger of divorce. Speaking to Radar, one source said, “Leaving his position at CAA to join Quibi was a huge gamble. At the time, Reese asked Jim if it was worth the risk, but he said he was up for the challenge and felt confident he’d bring home millions.” As a result of its unexpected demise, Quibi lost more than $2 billion.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that the couple simply grew apart and the short-form, snackable content that Quibi served up had nothing to do with their divorce. (It’s important to remember that Toth arranged for his then-wife Reese to score a reported $6MM payday for narrating a lame animal clip show!) Or maybe, if we’re going to wildly speculate about the personal lives of famous people we will never meet, we can just pray that this blind item refers to Witherspoon dating Tom Brady, because we really didn’t have that on our 2023 bingo card.
