On Thursday (March 30) night, Stephen Colbert told his Late Show audience he was feeling “a little extra American” that day due to some great news.

While on one hand, Thursday marked baseball’s opening day in New York, Colbert said he had some even more pressing news to share with the audience.

“Just a little something worth celebrating today because literally three minutes before I walked on stage here, The New York Times reported a New York grand jury voted to indict former President Donald J. Trump,” he said.

The crowd erupted into a standing ovation as the host celebrated the news in true Colbert fashion.

Someone handed him a plastic baseball hat with an ice cream sundae in it and a can of whipped cream, which Colbert proceeded to squirt into his mouth.

“I thought it would never come, I used to think, ‘ah, what does it matter if it came?'” he told viewers. “I didn’t know it would feel this good.”

As The Huffington Post noted, Colbert rarely says Trump’s name on the show, even going so far as to blur his name out in news headlines. But that has never kept him from dunking on the former president.

“This is good news for everybody, even him. He now gets to join his J6 prison choir,” Colbert continued, referring to the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Trump became the first U.S. president to ever be charged with a crime for paying adult film star Stormy Daniels $130,000 in hush money after she came forward about their affair in 2016. It is still unclear what charges he is facing.

Colbert was practically gloating as he told viewers, “He should see whether that grand jury will cut him a check for $130,000 because he is so screwed.”

But the talk show host did credit Trump with one thing once the applause began to die down. “Ladies and gentlemen, he was right,” Colbert said. “We’re finally saying Merry Christmas again.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35pm/10:35c on CBS and CBS All Access.
