Rob Lowe — who is coming up on 33 years of sobriety — stopped by today’s episode of The View, where he opened up about his son John Owen Lowe‘s decision to get sober five years ago.

When Alyssa Farah Griffin asked the St. Elmo’s Fire star what it’s been like sharing his journey with his 28-year-old son — who stars alongside him in the Netflix comedy Unstable — he told her that it’s “the dream.”

“As any parent will tell you, the relationship that a teenager, 20-something, has with drugs and alcohol, it’s a precarious one,” Rob said. “All you can do is lead by example and be there for when they’re ready. Because they’re never gonna do it for you, or for a job, or for a threat. Never. It’s only when they want it.”

He continued, “I was super blessed that Johnny woke up one day and was like, ‘I’m ready.’ And we have that together. I feel blessed to be in a recovery club with my son, hugely.”

After rising to fame in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 coming-of-age film The Outsiders, Rob decided to get sober in 1990 when he was 26 years old. Ahead of the 30th anniversary of his sobriety in 2020, he told Kelly Clarkson that it was “the best thing I ever did” while appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Meanwhile, John Owen dished on how his father helped him through his addiction during a January 2022 interview with People.

“On the most personal level possible, when I was struggling with addiction, he was always there for me,” he said. “I credit that with being one, if not the main, reason that I’m sober and living a healthy lifestyle.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC. Plus, you can check out the Lowes in Unstable, which is currently streaming on Netflix.
