The cold open of Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 4 “Big Week”on Apple TV+ is a gift for Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) and Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) fans. The former teammates and romantic rivals are ramping up their bromance as Roy follows through on his offer to train Jamie so he can become better than Zava (Maximilian Osinski). The only problem? Poor Jamie didn’t realize that Roy was serious about starting their extra-curricular training at 4 AM.

“We start at four so you can do three workouts a day instead of two,” Roy says to a half-asleep Jamie. “Now get dressed or I’ll start flicking your balls.”

We soon learn Roy’s not joking about that threat to Jamie’s testicles. As the younger footballer walks away the camera reveals that while he’s wearing a grey cotton t-shirt, he’s completely nude below the belt. Roy shakes his head in disapproval, but Ted Lasso star, EP, and writer Brett Goldstein laughed the scene off when Decider asked him about it recently.

“What day don’t I see Phil Dunster’s bum?” Goldstein said laughing. “You know, I mean, like, name a day of the week that doesn’t happen.”

We soon learn the reason why Jamie’s PJs are so unconventional. As he explains to Roy mid-workout, it’s “because I get cold upstairs and hot downstairs.” Roy accepts this as Jamie pukes post-workout.

Brett Goldstein also happens to be the writer for this week’s episode of Ted Lasso, but he refused to take sole credit for the idea of giving Jamie such a specific nighttime routine.

“I don’t like to ever sort of credit these things because… I can’t, I truly can’t remember [who came up with it],” Goldstein said. “It was either me or it was another writer. But in the end, you have these ideas that will get put in the mix. And that’s the thing.”

He was more effusive when it came to working with Phil Dunster on bringing Roy and Jamie closer together this season.

“I love the Roy/Jamie stuff. I think that’s the the other great love story in the show,” Goldstein said. “And Phil is very funny.”

“I think I was maybe filled with delight and excitement for him to read that episode and realize he was gonna have to do that opening scene.”

And it looks like we’re going to see more of Roy and Jamie’s bromance as the season goes on. By the end of the episode, Roy is showing up on Jamie’s front stoop and an eager Jamie is already there, headlamp on his head, ready to squeeze in one last workout.

“Let’s go, coach,” Jamie says as he jogs past Roy. This is a Ted Lasso relationship development we can certainly get behind.
