El chupacabra may be a terrifying Mexican legend about a goat-sucking monster, but in Chupa—a new children’s movie coming to Netflix tomorrow—it’s one of the most adorable creatures you’ll ever see.
Directed by Jonás Cuarón, who is the son of Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, Chupa tells the uplifting tale of a young Mexican-American boy named Alex (played by Evan Whitten) who visits his family in Mexico, and stumbles upon one of the most famous mythical creatures of Mexican lore: the chupacabra, a kind of vampiric monster that is said to suck the blood of goats. But this chupacabra is no monster—it’s a soft, adorable baby.
With the help of his grandfather Chava (played by Demián Bichir, and his cousins Luna (Ashley Ciarra) and Memo (Nickolas Verdugo), Alex is determined to help this baby reunite with its family. Unfortunately, a nefarious government-hired researcher, played by Christian Slater, has other ideas for the creature.
