Ali Wentworth — a longtime friend of Brooke Shields and co-producer of her new Hulu documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields — opened up about her real thoughts on the controversial 1978 drama that thrust the young actress into stardom.

“Back then, obviously, people went and saw Pretty Baby and were like, ‘Oh yeah, what a great Louis Malle film,’” Wentworth told Variety. “You could never make that film now. It’s actually disgusting and revolting to watch it.”

Shields was only 11 years old at the time she played a child prostitute in Pretty Baby. While the film received divided reviews at the time of its release for what many called pornographic content involving an underage Shields, it has gone on to receive a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Wentworth went on to discuss how the trend of sexualizing young people continues in the social media landscape.

“This woman was sexualized at a young age,” she told the outlet of Shields. “And [that trend] continues and continues and continues. That’s happening now with social media. We’re just all going like, ‘She’s posted a cute bikini shot, and she’s 12 years old.’”

She continued, “We’re in it now, and we’re not realizing the ramifications of how this whole young generation is sexualizing themselves, right?”

While Shields previously called Pretty Baby the “best creative project” she’s ever been associated with, she went on to say that she “would not facilitate it” if it were her own daughters involved in the film.

In the documentary, Grier Hammond Henchy — Shields’ 16-year-old daughter — tells her mom, “You were 11, you weren’t old enough to be making your own decisions. Other people signed off being, like, ‘Oh no, she’s fine. You can take her top off, she’s fine,'” while her other daughter, Rowen Henchy, says it’s “child pornography, technically.”

Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields is currently streaming on Hulu.
