Drama series Sex/Life has been canceled by Netflix after two seasons.

According to Deadline, the decision comes just five weeks after the show’s second season debuted. Season 2 only had six episodes, which was down from eight in season one.

Series star Sarah Shahi also signed on to star in ABC‘s forthcoming legal drama Judgement about three weeks ago.

For those familiar with the show, Season 2 provided some closure as Billie (Shahi) reunited with her ex, Brad (Adam Demos), and got married on a beach. Showrunner Stacy Rukeyser, however, told The Hollywood Reporter that she didn’t think the show was over after that.

“The episode was never intended to be a series finale, that’s for sure,” Rukeyser said shortly after Season 2 premiered. “I know there are always more stories to tell with these characters in the Sex/Life universe, and I hope we get the chance to tell those stories. It was important that we get to a meaningful place with each character this season.”

During a podcast interview, Shahi had shared that she felt she “did not have the support” on season two that she did on season one of Sex/Life. “It became a much different thing for me, and I’m not afraid to say that,” she said on Not Skinny But Not Fat. “I struggled with the material. … I mean, I’m never going to work for Netflix again now after saying all this. I just can’t lie.”

According to Netflix’s own streaming data, Sex/Life Season 2 had 45 percent less viewership than Season 1, which drew 232.79 million hours within a few weeks. The show’s second season also spent time on the Netflix Top 10 English-language series list from March 2-26.

At one point, Shahi had said it was a “bummer” that Demos had less screen time in season two. Shahi and Demos have been in an actual relationship since December 2020. “I think that’s what made Brad and Billie so popular was because people really felt the real sparks between us,” she said on the podcast, calling some of the storylines that did make it into season two “gimmicky.”

In addition to Shahi and Demos, Sex/Life stars Mike Vogel, Margaret Odette, Cleo Anthony and Darius Homayoun. The show is executive produced by Rukeyser along with J. Miles Dale and Jordan Hawley and was inspired by BB Easton’s book 44 Chapters About 4 Men.
