Drew Barrymore and Brooke Shields bonded over their shared pasts as child stars during this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, and delved into their complicated early careers managed by their mothers.
Drew — who was emancipated from her parents at the age of 14 — revealed that Teri Shields was the “original momager” who paved the way for her own mother, Jaid Barrymore, to eventually become her manager.
“We both had mothers who we needed to navigate and keep alive and take care of,” Brooke said. “They were broken.”
Just how “broken”? Drew later revealed, “I was so confused about sexuality because my mom went and dated my boyfriends,” before asking her guest if she ever had a similar experience with her own mother.
“No, because she was in love with me. I was her main focus,” the Pretty Baby star said. “And both of us were gonna be cut off from our sexuality. I was gonna stay a virgin. She was going to be just Teri Terrific.”
Meanwhile, Drew presumed that Jaid “might have been so enamored” with her that she “actually wanted to be with the people” that she was with, to which Brooke replied, “I don’t get it but I get it. It’s so layered and it’s so needy. And it’s so sad and broken.”
The actress-turned-talk show host turned to a more positive note as she pointed out that despite the turmoil they experienced growing up, the two icons were still able to laugh over the fact that their moms were so “in love” with them that they “behaved so absolutely inappropriately.”
She added, “And they’re our moms! They gave us life. And if my mom hadn’t schlepped me to every audition and become my manager, I might not be sitting here right now, and there’s nowhere on earth I’d rather be.”
The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays on CBS. Check the website for local airtimes.
