You can take the man out of Florida, but can you take the Florida out of the man? The suspenseful, twist-filled finale of Netflix‘s new Florida-set dramedy, Florida Man, sheds some light on that burning question and more.

“[People] laugh at the mug shots and the headlines, but what’s the story behind the meme?” Florida Man creator Donald Todd told Tudum when explaining his new series. “The brightest sun casts the darkest shadows, so people can hide in shadows. All of that creates an ethos that’s perfect for a bright and noirish crime story.”

If you’ve sped through all seven episodes of the Netflix original series, you know the fate of its protagonist Mike (Edgar Ramírez), who returned home to Florida to find Delly (Abbey Lee), the runaway girlfriend of Philly mobster Moss Yankov (Emory Cohen). But if you need that final eventful episode unpacked, or if you’re impatiently wondering if the Valentine family finds that gold, we’ve got a recap of Florida Man‘s finale, “Sunk Costs,” below.

Need Florida Man‘s wild ending explained? Want to rehash the twists and turns of the finale? Or curious if Florida Man Season 2 is coming to Netflix? We’ve got you covered. But be warned, Florida Man spoilers lie ahead.

Florida Man Ending Explained: Did Mike Get The Gold?

Mike came to Florida for Delly, but Delly came for life-changing treasure, which only Mike could help her retrieve. So did Florida Man end with anyone getting their hands on a chest of gold doubloons? Surprisingly YES. But the road to riches had far more potholes than anticipated.

Episode 7, “Sunk Costs,” opens by taking us back to the coast of Florida in 1715 and showing how a nasty storm caused a treasure chest to fall into the sea. In present-day, Mike is still stuck in jail, but gets an unexpected visitor in his cell: his dad, Sonny (Anthony LaPaglia). Though Sonny planned Mike’s arrest, his own arrest was not part of the plan. He says Andy (Paul Schneider) framed him for the Porta Potty explosion we saw earlier in the series, and in a rare earnest moment, Sonny tells Mike, “I had you arrested because I didn’t want you to kill Moss. I wanted you to let us do it…because you’re my son and that’s a bridge I did not want you to cross.” The father/son bonding is cut short when Mike makes bail. But once he leaves his cell he learns life outside is a mess. After checking his voicemail he learns Iris (Lex Scott Davis) was shot and in the hospital, but before he can go to her, he’s ambushed by Moss, who bailed him out to get the gold.

As Moss holds Mike at gunpoint, Delly snaps, “Get in. I get why you’re upset. The wrong girl taking the bullet and all.” Is she really on Team Moss? Was she playing Mike this whole time? If not and the gold doesn’t pan out, this girl has a potential acting career ahead of her. While Mike reluctantly takes Moss and Delly to the dock, Andy confronts Sonny in jail and reveals he’s locked up because he’s linked to a boat that’s been supplying drugs. Yikes.

At the dock, Mike successfully makes the treasure truck float to the water’s surface, but when he opens the door a whole lot of nothing stares back at him, Delly, and Moss. With no gold in sight, Moss and Mike start duking it out. When Moss gains the upper hand and Mike once again finds himself at gunpoint, Delly — who never forgave Moss for murdering her father — pulls her own gun (well, Deputy Ketcher’s gun) on Moss and kills him, saving Mike. After the murder, a motorbike rides up and Ketcher himself returns to get his gun, find the Moss bullet, and give an extremely Florida Man speech. “I’ve formed a new understanding the past few days for people living on the margins of society. I did have a finger up my ass, but all I wanted was a gun. You wouldn’t think that’d be hard to get in Florida. But of course I had to pick a murder weapon, which is probably also inevitable given the odds...I have zero interest in either one of you, all I want in the world is to get my gun back and get the fuck out of Florida,” he says.

Once the three load Moss’ body into the back of the truck and sink it again, Ketcher bounces and Mike and Delly confront each other about all the betrayal. Delly was playing Moss after all and wants to be with Mike, but Mike leaves (with a recording of Moss confessing to murder) to go visit Iris in the hospital. She eventually wakes up to another iconic line (“The good news is your alive. The bad news is you’re still in Florida), and when the series jumps ahead three weeks, we learn she joined the FBI after someone from the governor’s office recommended her after seeing her undercover work at Moss’ house. Next time we see her, she’s exiting a plane behind a woman who says, “Tell the pilot to keep the AC on. I won’t be in Florida long. Let’s go find my brother.”

At last, the sinkhole is filled forever. Delly gets out of dodge and calls her mom to ask for help disappearing. Ketcher flips Florida the bird and skips town. A woman arrives to claim ownership of the motel. And Mike fully falls back into his Florida Man ways while manning the bar in his dad’s absence. He catches a classic Florida Man news report on TV that details a Florida man getting swallowed whole by an 18-foot python, then steals the story and tells his dad that’s how Moss died. Mike accusing Sonny of stealing the treasure the night before they put their plan in motion, and Sonny admits he did, but only to keep the gold from Delly. After Mike presses him, he admits he was never going to tell him about the gold for fear he would have left Florida.

Before the season ends, Mike makes amends with his sister Patsy (Otmara Marrero), who inspires him to track Delly by GPS. He reaches the coordinates and finds a boat with traces of Delly and a single gold coin on the bed. After tearing the room apart, Mike uncovers the treasure and Delly appears behind him, saying, “fucking GPS, right? So Mike. Did you come here for me? Or for the gold?” The two smile at each other and it seems they just might get their happily ever after (and a lifetime of financial security).

Will There Be A Florida Man Season 2 on Netflix?

Netflix’s Florida Man was created as a limited series, which means Season 1’s seven-episode arc may very well be all we see of the series. But if the show proves popular, there are definitely a number of Season 1 storylines and cliffhangers that can carry over into Season 2. And let’s be real, the “Florida Man” meme possibilities are endless, so perhaps there’s a Florida Man anthology in our future.

Decider reached out to Netflix to inquire about a potential Florida Man continuation and will update this article if we hear back.

Florida Man is now streaming on Netflix.
