If you’ve seen even one episode of Ted Lasso, you’ll probably know that Ted’s fashion sense usually toes the line between business casual and athletic casual.

He is, of course, the coach of a football soccer team, but he tends to leave the tracksuits to Coach Beard and Roy, instead opting for khakis (always khakis), a button-down shirt, and some kind of sweater or sweatshirt, finishing the look with aviators, of course. Most of the time, it’s A.F.C. Richmond branded, but sometimes, Coach Lasso will be sporting something a little more inconspicuous.

Three times so far in the third season, he’s worn Todd Snyder + Champion’s Midweight Pocket Sweatshirt. First, he was spotted in the classic gray style, with a T-shirt layered underneath; while he attended the team dinner at Sam’s restaurant, he wore a now sold-out rust red variant paired with a button-down; then, on an eye-opening night out in Amsterdam, he’s seen in a sold-out burnt orange sweatshirt. At other points in the series, he’s seen wearing his original navy sweatshirt.

Todd Snyder hasn’t always been a brand synonymous with athleisure. It started as a New York City menswear brand that specialized in signature suiting, elevated basics, and the occasional statement piece, but a collaboration that began in 2013 quickly became one of the brand’s best sellers.

That now practically iconic collab was with none other than Champion, the 104-year-old sportswear brand. What makes it so smart is it doesn’t focus on Champion’s present but its past by utilizing archival Champion logos and patches that are more 1930s — when the brand’s main focus was sweatshirts and hoodies — than 2000s. The brand has always been deeply rooted in sports fashion history.

This aesthetic pairs perfectly with that of Todd Snyder, a designer who looks to a bygone era of menswear for inspiration and direction.

The Pocket Sweatshirt became a massive bestseller, even doing as much as lowering the average age of Todd Snyder shoppers, and the brand knows they have a good thing going. Occasional redesigns that adjust the fit or seasonal collections with new colors only further this crewneck’s notoriety and success.

If Ted’s anything like us, buying quality one item that fits well in a variety of colors is usually a safe bet. It speaks to the design, craftsmanship, and ease of wear of a product that you’re willing to shell out money for more than just one.
