A Good Person

Powered by Reelgood

Tragic tales of lost loves, grieving families, and spiritual awakenings sit front and center in this week’s new movies on VOD. Love and death are the central themes of A Good Person, the newest film from writer-director Zach Braff, and Emily, the biographical story of the life of Emily Bronte.

As for that spiritual awakening, Jesus Revolution is the true story of the Christian movement that sprang up in California in the 1960s. (Fun fact: The term “Jesus freaks” was born from people who were critical of the movement.) Kelsey Grammer stars as Chuck Smith, a pastor whose congregation is dwindling, but is revitalized when a young, singing hippie named Lonnie Frisbee (Jonathan Roumie) preaches his Ministry of Jesus. Frisbee’s passion and cool hippie vibes help gain legions of followers, mostly young followers who find comfort in his message. The film’s faith-based themes and not-so-subtle evangelism are central, but it’s also a fascinating story of a movement that was a huge part of the ’60s.

A Good Person

Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman star in the Zach Braff film A Good Person, about two struggling, grief-saddled people who lean one one another for support. Pugh stars as Alison, a woman who sinks into depression and drug addiction after she kills two of her loved ones in a car accident. Freeman plays Daniel, who was also deeply affected by the car crash and is now raising his granddaughter alone as a result. Much like Braff’s other films, Garden State and Wish I Was Here, the tone straddles the line between sadness and optimism as the main characters struggle to find themselves amid the haze of trauma and grief.

Emily

Much of what we know about the life of Emily Bronte is thanks to records kept by her sister Charlotte, who outlived her, so it makes sense that the new biographical film Emily, begins with Emily (Emma Mackey) on her death bed, telling her sister about what inspired her only novel, Wuthering Heights. The film depicts an imagined version of the writer’s life, featuring Emily’s romance with William Weightman (played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and the events and tragedies she endured which helped inform her classic Gothic novel.
