Netflix’s latest steamy romance series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story reveals just how young Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) fell in love with King George III (Corey Mylchreest). However that’s not the only important relationship in Charlotte’s life that finally gets a backstory. We also see how Charlotte met an eager young attendant named Brimsley (Sam Clemmett) on her very first day in England. Just as Charlotte and George’s love blossoms, her friendship with Brimsley blooms.

Bridgerton fans first met the older version of Brimsley (Hugh Sachs) in Season 1. He was Queen Charlotte’s (Golda Rosheuvel) right hand man and primary purveyor of snuff and gossip. In Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Charlotte is paired with Brimsley immediately after arriving in England. To her shock and disgust, the young manservant’s job is to literally follow her around. So much so, it causes many moments of irritation for the young queen and hilarity for the audience.

According to Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story star Sam Clemmett, the show’s director Tom Verica encouraged India Amarteifio to purposely mess with him in these scenes.

“I remember particularly a day on set that Tom had given India a note to basically mess around with me. So he said, ‘Just stop in the middle of the hallway.’ Because we were just doing a one tracking shot of us walking down a corridor. ‘And move to the left. Move to the right. Stop. Move behind [Sam]. Turn around.'” Clemmett said. “So I’m doing this sort of [moves in circles] dance not really knowing what’s coming next. And stitch me up. So it’s a particularly fun moment.”

India Amarteifio sarcastically joked with Decider that filming those scenes with Brimsley was “a bit annoying” before singing co-star Sam Clemmett’s praises.

“He is great,” Amarteifio said. “Great is an understatement. Sam is phenomenal.”

“But also it was a little bit annoying for Charlotte and it also helped me to always have that angst of, ‘Ugh, there’s constantly someone behind me all the time. I feel like I can’t be myself. I can’t switch off.’ So it was incredibly important for being able to find that fire to create Charlotte.”

Brimsley’s devotion to Charlotte is such that he’s there for her through thick and thin, from the start of her reign in 1761 all the way to the late Regency era of Bridgerton. And it seems that Sam Clemmett’s devotion to trailing India Amarteifio helped her channel the queen like nothing else.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is now streaming on Netflix.
