It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day is making his directorial debut in the star-studded, R-rated film Fool’s Paradise.

Starring Ken Jeong, Ray Liotta, Jason Sudeikis and more, the movie follows Day’s character Latte Pronto, a mute man who gets discovered because he closely resembles a method actor who refuses to leave his trailer. With the help of a wild publicist, played by Jeong, Pronto becomes a huge movie star — until he loses it all.

The movie was originally filmed in 2018, but after director Guillermo del Toro offered him notes on the first draft, Day revisited the script and added 27 more pages to make Jeong’s character a larger driving force in the movie.

“I think I felt extremely confident in approaching this experience of directing this film because of my years of experience on Sunny,” Day told Vanity Fair. “And I still think I made every mistake in the book, but I was able to clean up as much of it as I could with the reshoot.”

Day, who recently starred as Luigi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, was more than willing to take on the challenge of playing a mute character.

“I always wanted the opportunity to play a silent character,” he said. “I wanted the acting challenge. It was a big swing.”
